There seem to be some REALLY knowledgeable people hanging around here! I am in the market for a 5 MP digital *SLR* type camera. Not ready to make the jump into an actual SLR but do favor that style and the interchangeable lenses. Currently considering the Canon G-5 and the Minolta Dimage A1. Wondering if any of you have opinions either direction. This is a huge jump from a toshiba 2mp and a Panasonic 4mp but I just want more! I'm also taking some digital photography classes and will need the interchangeable lenses by the third class so I just want to upgrade all at once.

Thanks so much! :sunny:

I have the Canon G-3 which I bought about 6 months before Canon introduced the digi-Rebel.

I really like the G-3, but I wish I'd waited and bought the digi-Rebel as I already own a Rebel 2000 film SLR.

My three complaints about the G-3 are:

1) it's hard to get action shots, but I think Canon has fixed this ... my DD's Canon A-60 has an "action" choice on the "dummy" dial

2) I miss the thru the lens viewfinder that you get on an SLR ... yes, I can use the LCD screen, but I think I get more camera shake taking photos this way

3) I have "issues" with the auto-zoom ... I miss being able to manual zoom to the perfect spot ... with the auto-zoom I tend to zoom in, then out several times.

Honestly, if you're going to need interchangable lenses for a photo class, I'd go with the digi-Rebel. I know several people who have bought the digi-Reb and they all LOVE it ... even one who was hesitant about going digital.

because there is quite a price jump between the g5 and DRebel. I was under the impression that there are manual focus capabilities on the G5. I'm going to look at them today, finally found a store that carries them! Still can't find the minoltas locally though :(

Thanks for your help!
