Digital Camera

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was trying decide between the Canon SD400 and the Nikon coolpix S4.
I was kind of leaning towards the S4 because of the high optical zoom - 10X, but the Canon is more compact but only has a 3X optical zoom. Does anyone have recommendations?

Go with the better optical zoom. It'll come in handy more often than not!

My DD has a Kodak with 10x zoom and I have a Kodak with 3x zoom. Her "distance" pictures are much nicer than mine. If I had the choice like you do, I'd go for the higher zoom. You won't be disappointed. :)

We have 2 digital cameras, an olympus with 10X optical zoom and a canon with 3X optical zoom (actually the predecessor of the SD400). We brought both cameras with us to DL last years and took over 1200 pictures. Most of them were taken with the Canon, since it was smaller and easier to carry around we took it to the park more often. The olympus did take some great pictures too. I'll admit that when i'm using my canon i have some zoom envy.

Sorry i can't give you a cut and dry answer, i like both cameras for different reasons. We use the smaller one more (especially on vacation) but the olympus can take pictures that look like you were a lot closer to the action.

I have both a Nikon and a Canon (S400 or something like that)... and the Canon goes EVERYWHERE with me. I like the compact-ness of it - SO much less bulk to carry around.

We have the Nikon coolpix 4mp, and we upgraded to the Cannon. They are BOTH really nice and user friendly. We like the size of the cannon, because it fits in a pocket. The Nikon does not. You cant go wrong with these choices, you'll get a lot of use with either of them. (Of course our family is tourists, not photographers!)
Good luck!

Thanks for all the input. I'm still deciding.

Check warranties as well. Up here in the Great White North, Nikon products come with a two-year warranty, and Canon only offers one year.

Remember...

The only camera you will get good pictures with is the one you take with you.

A stronger zoom is really nice, but only if you have the camera with you when you want to take a picture.

If you have any reservations about the size of the camera with the higher zoom, get the smaller one.

If you have NO reservations about the size, and know you will take the bigger camera with you, go with the bigger zoom.

Personally, I went with the smaller camera that fits in my pocket.

Well, I decided to go with the smaller camera and bought the Canon SD400, and I really liked the camera, but when I was using it at my son's indoor swimming party, all of a sudden the screen went black. I don't know if it was because there was too much humidity (it was pretty warm inside), but I don't think this should have happened. After a few minutes the camera started working again. Has anyone had this problem? Is this something to be expected with humidity?

Heard through the grapevine that this particular model is a touch sensitive to humidity and high altitudes.... great camera other than that. I've heard of lots of people never having a problem with it.
