Digital Camera ????'s

I just got my first digital camera--a Canon. It has taken me three nights of study but I think I am ready for the parks. I even figured out how to shoot in sepia, black and white, and to set the camera for the fireworks at night.

Anyway--how do I get the camera there? We are flying. When we used a 35 mm, they said to have security hand check our 800 speed film. Do we do the same with this camera or do I just leave it in my carry on and let them x ray it?

Do I leave the SD card in the camera at all times, or do I put it back in that little plastic thing it came in?

Do I leave the battery in the camera at all times, or do I take that out and put its little plastic thingie on so the metal "sprockets" on teh back are not damaged?

The manual apparently assumes I am not a total newbie and I don't want to break the silly thing!

I have traveled with my digital camera a number of times and here is what I have done...and the camera has suffered no ill effects...

Carry the camera on with you. It's an easy target for theft in checked baggage. Checked baggage also takes some rough treatment! I usually travel with a backpack as a carry on and that is were the camera goes. I have had no problems letting the camera be x-rayed. I leave a SD card in the camera all the time and I leave the batteries in. I do, however, ensure that it won't get turned on in the bag on the way. A piece of tape over the button that turns it on (mine is a button, yours may not be) works or a piece of paper over the contacts at one end of the battery works too. That way the batteries are where they should be and I don't have to find them when I want them! Taking the batteries out would be fine to, you just have to keep track of where you put them!

Congratulations!

1. don't bother shooting in sepia, b/w and all that jazz. You can always do that later with a photo editor program.

2. digital cameras will be fine thru security. no need for hand checks.

3. leave the SD card in the camera. It'll be fine.

4. leave the batteries in the camera. throw the plastic sprocket away. you won't need it anymore.

Agree with all of the above, except maybe don't throw the plastic sprocket away.

Someday, you will experience the sadness of running out of battery juice, and you will then buy another battery. The backup battery is probably best kept with a plastic sprocket thingy, so it doesn't short-circuit in your pants pocket and do something unfortunate to you.
