I have a great 35 mm camera but I really want to get a nice digital camera. We have one and at the time a few years ago it was supposed to be a good one. Well, I hate it because there is a slight delay, so when taking pics of people the delay ruins the pose.

Can anyone recommend a digital that has a fast speed that is not a small fortune?

Thanks!

Let me just add that I do not know much about cameras. I just want a nice pic w/ no delay once I push the button like my 35mm.

It depends on what you consider to be too expensive. There are some nice point and shoot cameras out there that have very little delay for around $300. If you are willing to go to a DSLR, the you can get less delay for around $500. The cheaper ones out there are the Pentax K110D, Nikon D50, and Canon Rebel XT.

If you buy online, be careful b/c there are many shady places out there. If the price looks too good, then it probably is a scam. A few reputable places are B&H, Adorama, Buydig, and Beach Camera. Also, I believe there is a rebate on the Pentax K110D and K100D right now. The K100D adds image stabilization, but runs about $75-100 more. The lens that comes with these cameras (called a kit lens) are typically a 3X zoom starting a little wider than a typical p&s digital. You can also buy without a lens and pick one that suits you better. If you do that, you might go out of your budget though. Even if you have no plans to buy more lenses right away, DSLRs are a nice investment because you can always add on later. They can get very complicated, but all have auto modes to start out with while you are learning about the camera.

I am not as up on the p&s cameras these days, but many people like the Canon S3 IS and there is a Sony that many like. It may be the H5 or something like that.

Nothing has no delay unless you're focusing manually. The focusing is what usually takes the most time. Fortunately, most decent digicams nowadays, including point-n-shoot ones, have very fast focusing, so shutter lag isn't nearly the issue that it was a few years ago.
