Digital Camera Compatibility Question

Hi all,

May sound like a dim question this but if I take a memory card with me with my digital camera (both bought in the UK) will this be compatible with transfering it all to a CD in America? I have heard that some phot shops do this. I ask, as it looks like an attractive option rather than having to buy another memory card when out there.

Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Yes!

Memory cards are very cheap these days though - don't know how much it costs to get images put on a cd, but you can get a 2gb compact flash card for £25 these days: 7 day shop. Should store a few pictures :)

Yes it is compatible, just go into Walmart or walgreens (plenty others) they have machines similar to Asda here. put in your SD/MS/CF card into the slot choose your picks you want to save and send to disk.
When we did it 18 months ago there was a sign said ready in 1 hour for collection. As soon as I had finished I asked a member of staff a question and she said it was ready, it took minutes.
I just take laptop with me now, saves the hassle of finding somewhere when my cards are full.

Ive always stocked up on cards Id read too many horror stories of people coming home with blank CDs!!
Last time I had a 512 and a 256 card every night at the hotel Isdd delete the carp pics I didnt even fill the 512 card and brought home almost 600 great pics..

agree here! I usually take extra cards with me. I use 7dayshop as well as SD cards 1Gb is just £10.99 (plus post). Personally I prefer to use smaller cards, just in case you loose or damage one you don't loose too many photo's. I usually buy a few cards with friends so we split the postage between us.

Thank you for that! I just got a 256MB card for £13. Excellent!

Thanks for all your help! :thumbsup2

Was also wondering if, in the U.S., we need to have a special adapter for our U.K. battery recharger plug?

If it's the usual three pin 13amp, then yes, you will need one. Boots, luggage shops etc. sell them. Easy to find. In addition, if the charger is aimed at UK use, then it will take far longer to charge the batteries on the USA 110 volt system. You can buy a step-up transformer in Maplins for example, but they are so heavy.

No it won't. If it works at all on the 110V mains supply then it is what they call a switch mode power supply - I'll save you the technicalities but you will get the same voltage out of the battery charger whatever the input voltage. If it's not rated for different input voltages then it just won't work (without a step up transformer) as the voltage out will be too low.

That's interesting. I'm no expert at all, and relayed in the best way I could what Maplins said when I enquired about taking my DW and DDs hair straighteners which are UK pieces of kit.

So what you are saying is that if the straighteners or battery charger are designed to work only on 220 volts over here, you always have to use a step-up transformer, or run the risk of them not working at all in the USA.

Thanks.

Just wondering if it would be cheaper and easier to buy and take extra charged up batteries? :confused3

What camera have you got, I may be able to tell you?

Anyway, you should be able to tell from the charger if it works with different voltages - to be honest, most do, so all you should need is the adapter plug, which are cheap as chips.
