Digital camera advice needed.

Why has this simple request for info/guidance
become this contentious "thing".

Because information given, which met your criteria, became the subject of snide and unsubstantiated criticism by one person, and the poster of that information and others were made to feel foolish.

Can anyone advise me on a great,
(don't need all the bells and whistles)
easy, reliable digital camera to buy?

I understood his point, but I would have rather seen Mr. Fudge post an explanation of why he felt that that particular picture would not enlarge well to 8X10. That would have been informative. Instead, his commentary was simply callous and insulting.

I also would have rather seen more substantial, intelligent criticism of my choice of camera. Here I am saying I've had an awesome experience with my HP for many years, yet all we hear is how lousy they are, from someone who apparently has never even owned one. Give me a break!

Hey, I recognize the HP may not be up to the level of say, the Canon, but I still think that for $149, the camera and printing dock I posted are a great deal, and it totally fits my needs and may very well fit the needs of others here (we'll see, it should arrive tomorrow). Remember that HP is one of the largest sellers of electronic goods, and may explain not only why they can offer good deal$, especially at WalMart which is the largest seller of HP goods in the US, but why there may be more returns if indeed there are. :confused3 (BTW, the same camera bundle sells for $279 on the HP site itself).

As far as wandering over here from the CB, last night I was feeling as if it was a mistake, but today I feel differently. There are plenty of friendly posters here. :thumbsup2 Someday when I have more time to devote to photography as a hobby, I hope I can join your ranks of expertise. :worship:

aaahhh, is this aimed at me- cause I'm no expert at digital photos.
That's why I asked in the first place. And i certainly never thought or intended a post on the photo board would get so heated. :flower3:

First off, I never said your photo was bad. I said HP cameras are bad, IN MY EXPERIENCES with them. I did say I did not think the quality would stretch to 8x10, but hey that's my experience and my opinion.

I wish you would have read what I posted. There is not point in typing it again. Obviously you gloss over the fact I told you it was a nicely taken picture, and the subject was very nice. You chose to get angry because I insulted HP cameras.

Again, in the post I told you why I said what I did. Would you be more comfortable if I find reviews on the web to trash your camera choice? I didn't want to get into that, because frankly it's a waste of both our time. (Just like this thread has become) Quite a few times I also said, use what works for you.(not those exact words)

I never ever claimed to be an expert, professional, or even pro-am. I just offer advice based on what I know. Having used quite a few different camera's, I thought I could advise the people who asked. Be that steering them in one direction, or away from another. But once again I was expressing my opinions on those cameras and you took it personally.

It all depends what you are looking for. To me, that picture wouldn't meet the quality I was looking for. (Though it is an interesting picture :thumbsup2 )

Overall the image quality of the HP720 was impressive. Outdoors a wide angle lens will "see" a lot of bright sky and the metering system tends to underexpose foreground objects. This was infrequently the case with this camera. The Auto White Balance (AWB) is accurate and comparable to other cameras in this price point. Beyond AWB, it also has five preset manual white balance selections for more creative control.

If you want a snapshooter's no fuss digicam that is capable of making very nice 4x6" up to 8x10" prints with 'point-n-shoot ease and $329 (08/2002) is in the budget, then the Photosmart 720 may be just what you are looking for. The image quality and ease of use are the attractions and should attract many 'snap shooters' this fall.
