We have a Sony Handicam, the kind that uses 8 mm tapes. It has no fancy options, to be honest it is a very basic camcorder. We have a trip to WDW planned this year and we want to upgrade because it will be our first trip with the kids. I have been researching and asking questions at all the stores, BUT i want to hear from people who have digital camcorders. Is the film quality better? Is it worth spending 500 - 1000 dollars? I don't need it to be a digital camera since we have a great still camera, but I would use it as one if i needed to. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!!!!!!

I think the main purpose for a consumer to buy a digital camcorder is editing abilities, but yes, the video quality is better. If you are interested in this, but don't feel like spending 900 dollars or whatever, you should check into the sony digital 8 camcorders. They allow the ability to plug right into the computer and edit your videos (granted you have an editing application, though I think one might come w/ the sony cameras), and sony sells them on line for as cheap as 350.00, which means you can probably find them for even less on sale @ circuit city, or best buy, or wherever you shop for electronics.

tricia.

I wanted to add that with a digital 8 cam you can also put the tapes from your old camcorder in to the new one and watch them. and I wanted to send you a link to the camera i was suggesting:

sony dcr-trv260

tricia.
