Digital Cam Corder

I'm thinking of getting a digital cam corder for our upcoming trip. We currently have a 3 yr old VHS-C recorder which works but wieghs a ton when I use the "good" battery with it. What kind do people have, and would you recommend it?

What kind of battery life do you get?
How's the picture in day light or night?

I don't have one but have considered getting one of the digital camcorders. The reason for digital is easy transfer and editing on a computer if that something you've wanted to try.

Also, you can basically IGNORE most claims by the digital camcorder makers about their camera's still picture taking ability. They can't hold a candle to even an inexpensive ($300) digital camera.
