Hey, guys. So I got accepted into the Spring Advantage for 2011, but 2 days before I received the acceptance letter, I found out my mother is diagnosed with lung cancer. She wants me to go and doesn't want me to miss this opportunity; she is trying her absolute hardest to convince me. But if I go, I'd be absolutely terrified about what is going to happen to her and my younger sister while I'm gone.

Right to the point: I'd like to wait until Fall '11, but I've heard rumors that if you decline an offer once, it's really difficult to get another chance to participate in the program. How true is this? My mother also wants confirmation about these rumors. Do any of you have experiences with declining and trying again?

Thank you for reading. m(__)m

I don't have an answer for you, I just wanted to send you some pixie dust for your mom. Keeping you both in my thoughts

I can't comment on the difficulty of getting back in the program if you decline, I can only comment on your situation as a mother.

I personally would not want either of my daughters to miss an opportunity because of my health. I want them to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way, I want them to enjoy life, become independent adults and live long and healthy lives. I would not want either of them to miss out on something because of health issues. I would feel awful if they were to decline an opportunity because of me. Seeing them succeed in life, being happy and doing things they love keeps me going and would give me the strength to get better if I were ill. But I can only speak for myself.

I know where your mother is coming from and I understand why she doesn't want you to miss out on this opportunity.

Perhaps if you contact Disney and explain the situation, they could give you the answer you seek and maybe they could help you make a decision. Talk to them and let them know how much you want to participate but how concerned you are if you leave home at this time. You never know until you talk to them directly. While others may give their advice based on their own experiences, every situation is different and this merits direct communication with Disney. Give them a call and find out what they say.

My thoughts and prayers to your mother and to your entire family.

I assure you, if you explain the situation to Disney, they won't hold it against you and it won't affect your chances of a later acceptance. I had to drop out of Summer Alumni '10 for some family issues, and Disney totally understood and encouraged me to apply again at a later time. Going back in Spring '11. :goodvibes

I agree with this comment, your mother is in my prayers.

dealing with the same exact thing, you have to do what's best for you. you can't make your decision on what other people say because only you have to live with it.

It's not a problem at all if you have to decline. my freshman year i applied but it was bad timing and they said to apply again later if i'd like.. a year and half ago my sophomore year i applied again and got accepted right away :) so u can always go whenever the timing is better for u.

If you don't feel comfortable with leaving your mom, disney will always be here. Depending on where you live, you will be far away from home with no holidays off to see your family. If you explain the situation, disney will have no problem with you reapplying later. My cousin got in for this fall and declined cause she had other things she wanted to do this semester, and she got in again for this spring. Your situation is much more serious and I think disney will be pleased to have you apply again. They have been very friendly and accomodoating so far on my CP. Hope this helps.

Thank you for all your replies, everyone! I really appreciate it. I'll call Disney right away and explain my situation. :)
