Difficult decison - WWYD?

I bet your phone bill will go up if she does go. :scared1:

OMG Tony, I hadn't thought of that :scared1:

Mind you, think of all the airmiles you'll get, Nat, for our weekend cinema/birthday/just for the sheer hell of it get-togethers :rotfl:

When we were decided not to move back to CA one of the biggest reasons was education. After much discussion involving people here and in CA we decided that our girls would get a much better education over here. Even my DFIL who is a staunch American finally had to agree that we had made the right decision to move here. I don't know anything much about Washington D.C., so I can't comment on the education there, but it's something I would really look into before you make a decision. From what I have gathered education is one area that has really suffered in many of the states over the last several years.

Good luck in making your decision, I know from first hand experience how mind blowing it can be! :goodvibes

Wow, what an opportunity Joh, and my first instinct would be to say 'Go for it !'

But what a decision you have, and the only thing that would bother me would be the kids. Like you say, Daniel isn't so much of a problem, but having two girls roughly the same age as yours, I know that Kerry and Becky wouldn't want to be uprooted and be schooled in the US

It's a shame that this opportunity didn't come along in a couple of years when you know that they are settled in college and happy to stay at home

I'd still apply for the position Joh, at the end of the day you can always turn it down

:wizard: Good luck hun

Omg what an amazing oppurtunity !!

Personally if its something you feel you would like to do I say apply and see where it goes. If you apply and dont get the job you have no decisipon to make - if you get the job and decide its not for you you can still turn it down !!!
guess what im trying to say is that fate will play a part !!

Life i stoo short grab it with both hands and give it a go girl !!

(Sorry Nat :sad1:)

If it was me I wouldn't hesitate but you have children to consider so obviously that is a big factor.

I think there has been lots of good advice already given, as others have said apply for it and see where it goes. Good luck. :wizard:

It sounds like you are thinking through all the practicalities, so good luck with whatever you decide. It would be a complete non-starter for me, as I have never hankered for travel and don't ever want to live anywhere else. If it something that appeals to you though you should see if it can work it out so you get that chance.

what an amazing opportunity Joh, sounds like you are really thinking things through.
I would jump at the chance of moving abroard.
I would possibly apply and keep talking about the situation.
you dont want to decide to finally go and then the job doesnt happen.

good luck.xxx :goodvibes

Hello,

We are currently living out here,we have about another 6 months left, and will be very sorry to be leaving. The areas the embassy houses people generally have very good public school systems. Some people have older kids in the public system, others put their kids in the British school in DC, or in boarding school back in the UK. It is a very child friendly place. All the smithsonain museums in DC, including the zoo and natural history museum are free.

The first 6 months can be a bit up and down while people get settled in, but generally after that most people love it.

We have taken a few long weekend trips down to Florida. You can normally get a round ticket for $150. We have taken trips to the West coast for a round trip cost of $220 pp. We have been to the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and are hoping to do Yellowstone before we come back.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

:scared1: OMG, you didn't mention this the other night! You absolutely cannot go!
Seriously, what an amazing opportunity. I think in your place I'd be tempted to apply. As others have said, it would give you more time to think about it and discuss it with the family. If you get an interview, you don't have to go. If you get the job, you can turn it down. But if you don't apply, you'll never know.

Would your current boss know that you've applied though? Could it jeopardise your chances of getting something decent here if you decide it's not for you afterall?

How often does this sort of job come up? Maybe you could leave it a few years?

MAYBE you should apply Theresa! ;)

A family friend in the Navy moved to DC a couple of years ago and is LOVING it!

The only comment he has made is that their education is a little behind ours. Don't forget they start a year later than we do so already they're a year behind.

I think the last I heard the children had been moved up a year and things seemed much better.

I personally would say go for it as the experience for the children will be amazing and things like that can not be taught in any classroom.

My Dh would only have to ask me once!

you only regret the things that you 'don't do' in life . i suggest you apply and go for it- if you are offered the post - then have the heart to heart about making the decision. It is hard to decide when it's still a bit 'pie in the sky' and the reality of a job offer will focus your mind on the real issues.

the main thing is you can still keep in touch on facebook and the DIS!!!!

You will just have to have arrange more WDW DIS meets.

Good luck with your decision making.

Are you the main breadwinner otherwise how will a break/change of job affect Gary's pension?

Wow Joh, that's a biggie! :scared1: Not got any real advice, but you seem to have had some fantastic advice so far. :goodvibes

(With apologies to Nat) I think it would be definitely worth applying, and giving it a great deal of thought in the meantime. A family pow wow sounds like a good plan. All in all, the job sounds like a wonderful opportunity.

Good Luck, whatever happens.

I've just caught up with this and everything you've written suggests you've already made up your mind that you want to do it, Joh. If your family is behind you, go for it!:goodvibes

Oh Joh, what a wonderful oppertunity, if it suits you all, then I would go for it:goodvibes

Thanks all for your input, I really appreciate the advice and all of your comments.

Just a slight update - I found out today that I have got an interview for another job I applied for, working much closer to home (I currently work 25 miles away). It's still a MOD job so pay and everything else woud remain the same (and actually I would be slightly better off as I wouldn't have to pay childcare costs any more). Anyway, the long and short of it is that if I get offered the job, that will more or less make my mind up for me as I only have 3 days to accept and, once I have, I wouldn't be able to apply for teh Washington job anyway.

So, either way, my decision will be made next week :goodvibes
