Different use year?

Considering adding on a different use year. How difficult is it to transfer points? Since it would be considered a different membership anyways, does that mean I can title it differently (different family members' names than other contract/membership)? How confusing is it having 2 different memberships? Thanks.

If you plan to use the points from two different contracts for the same reservations, I highly recommend getting the same use year. I have one small contract with a different use year, and I use it only for one specific trip all by itself. Transferring means you have to call to transfer points and sometimes to make the reservation. There are rules which limit the number of transfers per use year, and although they seem to be ignored for contracts owned by the same person, there's nothing in writing that allows for that exception. A different name on the deed could cause problems, and the exception could change at any time.

Any change to UY or title would mean a new membership so if you went with a new UY, the names do not need to match what you have.

We have three UYS...one that is titled with DH and myself, along with our three adult children. The other two are just DH and I. But, we use each for specific trips and or specific parts of a split stay...which we do almost every trip.

The problem with relying on transferring is that you can't use transferred points online between the home resort period...and have to call...even if it matches the resort you own. That means you lose an hour in getting a trip booked...certain rooms and times of year that may be an issue.

Right now, DVC has allowed owners of multiple UYS to transfer as many times as they want between their own memberships...even if titled differently...but there is nothing that requires them to continue to do that. You also can't borrow the points once transferred, so you have to really stay on top of it since transferred points stay the same UY and home resort even when moved.

For example, if I transfer my 2023 Dec UY points to my Aug UY membership, they still remain Dec UY 2023 points. I wouldn't be able to use them for any trips in my Aug 2023 UY prior to Dec 1st.

Now, if you are like me, and want them for different trips, or are okay booking some nights on one and some on the other...that is what I have for our January RIV GV trip...two nights on Aug UY, and 1 night on Dec UY...and just have them linked so the resort keeps you in the same room, then that can work.

I also think that if you are going to have multiple UY's, the larger the number of points, the easier it is to accomplish what you want.,

So it sounds like I should probably hold out for a contract at the right price/right points for my UY, unless I am taking 2 separate trips. And it would be ok to have 2 UY for separate trips, but if 1 trip a year is a family trip and the other is a girls' trip with my sister, it doesn't mean I should share a membership/contract with her.

Are September UY harder to find in small (less than 100 pt) contracts?

Considering a direct add-on, but a different UY resale is cheaper.
