I was lucky to get an upgrade! :)

I got upgraded to a "Navigator's Verandah." I'm a little confused on the difference between a regular verandah and a navigator's verandah. Can someone please explain?? :confused3

A Verandah is what you typical think of as a balcony. There is a railing that goes a little more than waist high and the top is open. A Navigator's Verandah is a little different. The best way to explain it is to think of a big open porthole on your balcony instead of the top being totally open. They also have a nautical map on the wall (I don't know if the regular verandahs have these as I have only had a Navigator's Verandah on my 2 cruises). Hope that helps!

So you get less of a view and a map on the wall?
This does not sound like an upgrade to me.

I must admit I always thought a Navigator's Verandah was at a lower level that a standard verandah though other's may well correct me on this.

Maybe it's an 'Upgrade' in the same way that windows crashing out to the infamous blue screen of death is a 'feature'. :)

The description of the enclosed verandah with a very large oval opening at the top is correct. There's a bench seat on one side and a table and chair on the other. On the Wonder and Magic the bottom portion has wood paneling.

The navigator verandah is an upgrade from an inside or oceanview category.

I haven't seen the navigator's on the Dream yet.

On the Magic & Wonder it has a solid wall on the bottom half of the balcony so that you have to stand up to see out. It has a nautical theme to it. It is less desirable (to me) if you want to sit and see out at the same time. HOWEVER, it IS a valuable upgrade if you're coming from an inside or porthole category as it IS a free balcony. :thumbsup2 We were once upgraded (from the original categories before they subdivided everything) from a Cat 8 OV to a Cat 6 with the solid wall. The Cat 6's are slightly more open on top than the Navigator style in that they don't have the whole porthole opening on the top half...they're just OPEN above the railing. At the time, on our particular cruise it was about a $1,500 upgrade and we were thankful to get any balcony at all. While it's at the lower end of the balcony categories it's still a great freebie IMO. Personally, I wouldn't BOOK it and PAY for it because it's almost like an obstructed view but as a free upgrade congratulations on your pixie dust!! (Don't let Brumbie13 & DisFanJeb ruin your expectations! ESPECIALLY since you obviously didn't even have a balcony before!)

I'm not out to ruin anybody's excitement, I'm just trying to understand why this is considered an upgrade.

From the way I read the post, it seemed that OP had a regular verandah and got upgraded to a Navigator's verandah. Again, I'm trying to see how that would be an upgrade.

If the OP went from having no balcony to getting a navigator's verandah, then yeah, it's up upgrade.

Is the navigator's verandah more or less expensive than a regular verandah?

Nevermind, I just looked up the answer to my question.
The navigator's verandah is less expensive than the regular verandah.

In that case, it would definitely be an upgrade since the OP would for sure be coming from a room without a verandah.

Congrats OP!

Since the OP said she got lucky and got an upgrade to a Navigator verandah & the Navigator category is the lowest in the balcony category as a whole I assumed she originally booked either an inside cabin or an OV cabin. So ANY balcony would be better than NO balcony.:goodvibes I didn't want to see her excitement squashed just because it's not a clear plexiglass verandah. It's still exciting to get upgraded!

Of course. :)

I'm going on my first cruise in January, so I haven't been before and I know very little about the cruises or ships.

I was mistakenly under the impression that the navigator's verandah was more expensive than a regular verandah. I don't know why I thought that, maybe because it sounded more "special."

But now that I know that the navigator's verandah is the next step up from the porthole rooms, I understand that it was an upgrade from a room with a window.

I'm slow, but I'm learning.

Thank you for the info everyone!! Now I know what to expect!! :)

It was really an upgrade, as my original cabin only had a porthole window...with no verandah at all. ;)

Ahh! I read it as you going from a standard verandah to a navigator's verandah. If you've been moved from an ocean view then it's definitely and upgrade.

Congrats!

On the Magic the opening is round while the Wonder is an oval as you said.

I hope you enjoy OP! I have a navigator verandah booked for our first cruise in January and am very excited for it!

OP - Were you given a room number? 4 rooms classified as Navigator Verandahs are actually verandahs with obstructions.

I like to think of the Navigator Verandah as an enclosed patio. You are protected from the sea winds, but you have an outside room with a view.

Does anyone know what this will look like on the Fantasy? We are booked for an A7 in 2013.

Thanks,

John
