Hi,
I'm new to all this, so pardon me if this question seems stupid. I've done some reading on this board (seems like a lot), but I'm still unclear as to when I would want to rent points from a member vs asking for a reservation. Clearly, I'm not a DVC member and need some basics to start my research.
Thanks so much!

They are the same thing. Though it is usually called "renting points" you actually can not do that, they use the points simply as a reference point to price the reservation, at $X per point for example.

"Points" have no actual value and can't be transferred to a non-member. You are actualy renting a reservation from a member.

Haven't done this, but my understanding is:

You can make a reservation yourself through CRO if you want to pay cash.

If you want to rent from a DVC member (which should be cheaper than booking through CRO), the DVC member must make the reservation for you. You cannot call DVC member services to make a reservation if you are not a DVC member.

A certain number of points will be needed to make the reservation, but you can't do anything with the points yourself. The DVC member will be giving up those points so that you can use the reservation.

So whether you think of it as renting a reservation or as renting points doesn't really matter, as long as you understand that the member is the one who must contact Member Services.

If you were a DVC member who didn't have enough points to make a reservation, you might want another DVC member to transfer points to you. Then you could make the reservation yourself. But that doesn't apply in your case.

Thanks Chuck. That helps my brain out. I have read one of those threads and will continue on my reading. There is a lot of great info and it really helps that you are able to include those links for me. Thank you!

The most important thing to know about renting a reservation from a member. It's all between you and the member. Disney will not get involved in any way should you have a problem.
