Dieting for Disney

Wow just found this thread today.

Joined WW again on Monday and am going to stay with it at least til our Nov Trip. My goal is to lose 40 pounds and get fit. This is our fist WDW vacation and I've been planning it for many years. My 12 year old is walking with me at night and it is a great to get to spend time together. Just wish I could get rid of this heel pain I've had for over a year.

Thanks for all the great info.

Welcome Michelle! I'm considering going back to WW myself. Have you had the heel pain checked out? I've had trouble with that and it turned out to be plantar faciaitis. Hurts like heck!! Again, welcome and good luck!

I just had it checked a week ago and have gotten good fitting tennis shoes and heel pads. I was wearing a lot of sandles with no support. I'm also doing the excercises my doctor gave me. It is starting to feel better. :cheer2:

thanks

I found this thread and felt like sharing.

I lost 120 pounds on the South Beach Diet. I did it because we are going to Disney this August, and I didn't want to be grossly overweight in that heat and humidity (and I had these recurring dreams of getting "stuck" in the Space Mountain car :teeth: ).

I did this over the course of a year (we've been planning that long for this trip), and I have to say that the South Beach Diet is the first diet where everything just clicked. It makes sense to me, and it has changed what I eat to the point where I feel more confident about keeping the weight off. It wasn't always easy, but I stuck to my goal (and actually exceeded it).

I've wanted to be this way for a long, long time. And, I thank WDW for the motivation I needed to get there.

To anyone else trying, don't give up - it can work. It's not easy, but it's worth it.

Just wanted to check in and see how everybody is doing! :flower:
I've been walking again for 5 weeks now, and my friend & I have been incorporating jogging into our walk-at this point, we're jogging for about 1/3 of our 2 mile walk-not much, but I'm certain that it will increase to 1/2 jogging soon! :sunny:

I am having a really hard time staying OP this week. I guess I just need the motivation of a loss to keep me going . The thing is I was never overweight until I had kids 6 years ago. I even used to run 2 miles a day. Now I have alot to lose and it is just not coming off as quickly as I wish it would. I swim, walk, and run in the pool everyday. I thought I would lose with the added exercise but it is just not doing it for me. I am drinking my water daily too. Any other thoughts and tips on how to jump start my system. I even had my thyroid tested and it is fine. My DH seems to think something else may be wrong and that is the reason I can't lose. Well I got this all off my chest and today is a new day. We shall see what the scale says tomorrow.

everyday is a new day~it is so hard for me lately too! I lost only .2 this week :guilty: it was my own doing, I did not stick to the plan...but this week is going to be better! If you do weight watchers I would suggest a week of solid Core...that will help if you have been doing flex...good luck, change up your workout for this week, that is what I am going to do...keep going!! :wizard:

I finished my first week on WW and lost 4.6 pounds. It wasn't to hard sticking to the plan since my two littiest ones are at grandmas for the week. Next week were off to a family reunion for the week this will be a test of my will power.

I just keep thinking of Blizzard Beach and getting into a bathing suit :scared1:
Keeps me out of the frig.

Okay, I weighed myself the other day and I have lost 5lbs. It's only been a week. Does this sound like too much to lose?? I'm new to dieting so I'm not sure. Anyone?? I just want to make sure I'm doing it the healthy way (am using WW).

PaulDavid'sMom-
Congrats on losing 5 lbs!! I am on WW and I also lost 5 pounds a week for the first few weeks. Now, I am averaging between 2-4 a week. If you stick to it and exercise, you could probably continue to lose at that rate. My MD told me that it is not healthy to lose more than 2 pounds a week. I can't help it, my body wants this weight gone! Good luck and keep at it! :flower:

If you don't mind me asking, did you really notice it when you looked in the mirror (after the first 5 lbs)? I don't and was just curious if it was just me! If not, when did you really start to notice it?? I'm just so excited and really want to see some results in the mirror.

I don't remember when I first noticed (in some ways I thought I looked bigger-more defined rolls rather than all smooth) but my coworkers didn't start saying anything til I lost 50 pounds. :earseek: I'd like to loose another 20 or 30 more pounds.

I come from a family of nutritionists, dieticians, personal trainers, and physicians. I've learned over the years that true weight loss (bodyfat vs. muscle) is around 1-2lbs per week. Anymore than that and you are losing water, muscle or both. You don't want to lose muscle because it burns more calories at rest than fat. I was stupid enough to do Atkins a few years back and although I dropped weight alarmingly fast, I was also keeping track of my bodyfat. My weight went down, my bodyfat went up. I lost muscle (and lots of water weight). :guilty:

I have gotten smart. I don't pay attention to weight so much anymore. I was wearing a size 6 at 140lbs and 5'1". My sister weighed 125 at 5'4" and was in a size 10. She was about 8% higher in bodyfat that I was and it made that big of a difference. With the higher muscle mass, I can consume a LOT more calories during the day :Pinkbounc and NOT pack on weight because muscle is metabolically active, whereas adipose tissue (fat) is not.

So as long as you stick with the rule of thumb....take in less calories than you use and keep it within 1-2lbs a week....you will have a healthy and successful weight loss. Plus, it's been proven that the slower you lose the weight, usually the longer you keep it off :cheer2: . Obviously, if someone has LARGE amounts of weight to lose, this doesn't always hold true. Very overweight people will lose large amounts of weight much faster than the person who has 20lbs to lose.

A pound of fat is 3500 calories. So to lose a pound of fat per week, you could cut your daily calorie consumption by 500 calories (5 X 7 days = 3500 calories) OR you could cut your daily calories by 250 and go workout for 30-45 minutes. The benefit to working out (lifting weights) is that you will build some muscle, which will then enable you to consume more calories per day without putting on weight. And for women, lifting weights has another benefit...it helps build bone mass that will help prevent osteoporosis later in life :goodvibes

I think everyone should know a few numbers about themselves. Their weight, bodyfat percentage, and their basal metabolic rate (BMR). My basal metabolic rate is around 1200 calories. This means I burn 1200 calories just being alive. That's with absolutely NO activity at all...not even getting out of bed. So I can easily consume 1500 calories, give or take 100, and still have a calorie deficit and lose weight, especially if I exercise that day. If you take in less calories than what your body requires to live and breathe, your body will start utilizing your muscle for energy. Not a good thing. :sad2: That's why it's generally not a good idea to go on diets that "allow" you to only have 1000 or less calories per day.

If you are up for some in depth reading, I would recommend this site:

http://www.hussman.org/fitness/

Warning: it is a lot to read but provides lots of sound advice on how the body works when it comes to losing and gaining weight.

Sorry if this post seems either out of place or too "technical". I just wanted to provide some input that doesn't revolve around this program or that program (which by the way I'm certainly not negating...I use Body For Life and it works great for me and I know WW has been terrific for a lot of people). Use these principles and you will lose weight, build muscle and bone mass, and be healthy. :earboy2:

I'm not one to talk right now...nursing school packed on a LOT of weight :rolleyes1 and I'm working on losing it now that I've graduated. I posted a link to pics in an earlier post on this thread of my Before and Afters of doing the BFL program. Those After pics were BEFORE nursing school....LOL. I was a size 6 when I began school and I'm now a lovely size 12 (14 in some clothes). I just put up a couple of recent photos that show me at my heaviest....hopefully, by the of summer, I will have new ones that are MUCH improved! Here is the link again....they are the first 10 photos or so, I think:

I need to lose about 10% bodyfat and probably 20lbs (my goal weight right now is around 140) to feel comfortable and be able to fit into my size 6 shorts again. This is going to be a long, hot summer if I can only squeeze myself into my size 12 pants!!

Thanks for replying. WOW good for you for losing the weight! I hope I can stay that motivated!!! :)

I gained 40+ pounds in a few months after I had baby #2 due to a thyroid problem. By the time I saw a specialist the thyroid issue went away but not the weight. Then I got pregnant with baby #3. I never gained too much weight pregnant-only 8 pounds with that baby I was so sick but she was a very healthy 8 lbs 12 oz. I gained the weight after having the baby. When she turned 1 I decided it was time I got serious about loosing some weight.

My Mom's been in the hospital for several months and I've gained back 10 pounds but I just joined WW at work again so I'm ready to get serious about it again.

I know I'm one of those who GAINS weight when under a lot of stress. There were quite a few of my nursing classmates who lost a lot of weight over the course of school. Guess it depends on how your body deals with it. My cortisol levels skyrocket and really pack on the fat. My mom, on the other hand, loses weight anytime she's under a lot of stress. Then again, stuffing my face with crappy food and not going to the gym probably helped a lot of that weight find its way to my body! :rotfl:

I think McDonalds had something to do with it and when I was doing WW I wouldn't even have Klondike bars in the house. I dare not admit how many of those I've eaten over the past few months. It was the stress that weakened my will but I'm ready to get OP again!

I'm down 5 lbs. now!!! :cool1: :cool1:
The fact that the 2006 package prices are starting to come out is soooo motivating to me. I have a deal with my husband (my terms :rotfl2: ) that when I lose the 10lbs. I want to lose, I can book our next vacation to WDW!!!!!

I also am now up to $20. Disney Dollars ($10 per 2 lbs.)-so that's a fun motivator too!! :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Now to get thru this long weekend with all of the parties we are headed to...

Should we write some ideas about dishes to bring to these parties (besides a vege platter or basic fruit salad)? I'll get us started...

One thing I'm making for 1 party I'm going to is a simple brushetta:
(I don't have exact measurements because I always wing it)
1 med. red onion, chopped
minced garlic
Roma tomatoes, diced
Mix the above together and add olive oil and balsalmic vinegar to taste (also a dash of salt)
Cut up French bread in thin slices & lightly toast to put out w/brushetta.
It's very good-fresh tasting and better than so many of the high calorie dips.
Enjoy!! :sunny:

I lost .5 again this week. :flower: I am the one having the party. I am planning on ff hotdogs by oscar myer and boca burgers with low calorie buns that are only 80 calories for myself. I am going to check out the WW website for some low point desserts. My guests are bringing the side dishes. So atlest I know I can have my fruitsalad.
