If ya gotta drink diet soda, what is the best one for you?
I had been having a daily can of diet coke but now I saw it also has sodium! I get too much sodium in my food so if I can cut out the diet coke all the better for me.
However, when Im w/DS on daytrips over the wknds I like taking cans of diet coke w/us in a smaller cooler. And I like having the caffeine while driving home after a long day.
Sooooooooooooo what do I do? Cutting out the sodas while sitting here at work is a start.

If you like the cola flavor, you would probably like Diet Rite. It contains no sodium, caffeine or Aspertame (sp?). It uses Splenda for a sweetener, which is supposed to be better for you.

That's what I drink, although I try to stick mainly with plain old water most of the time.

Hope that helps!

I wish I could help you, IGTD, but since I started Atkins, I haven't drank any soda, diet or otherwise! Nicole is right though, I have read that Diet Rite is the best kind to drink because it has Splenda in it! :)

Sorry, but I cut all soda out just about 2 years ago now because of the sodium level. That helped get the first 40 pounds off.

I limit my caffeine to 1-2 cups (ok mugs) of coffee in the morning. If I absolutely feel like I need a boost later in the day I'll draw an ice tea - we have a brew pot in our kitchen here at work - but stick mainly with water.

And I've tried to stay away from foods with aspartame - my body just doesn't react well to it.

Another vote for Diet Rite! No sodium, no caffeine, and no aspartame! :Pinkbounc

I've also switched to Diet Rite - no caffeine and no sodium and sweetened with sucralose (Splenda). In addition to cola, DR also has some flavors. I've tried and liked Raspberry and White Grape.

FWIW, I prefer the taste of Diet Coke, but am trying to avoid aspartame. Atkins recommends Diet Rite for those of us who must have our soda. I do have an occasional Diet Vanilla Coke as a treat, but since it has aspartame, caffeine and lots of sodium, I do try to limit it.

Anyway, if you want to avoid sodium in your soft drinks, Diet Rite is the way to go!

Good luck!

If I'm going to drink a diet soda, it's going to be Diet Coke or Diet Dr. Pepper! Yummmmmmmmmm.

But only after I have gotten all of my water in. ;) As the other posts have started, Diet Rite doesn't contain sodium.

But... if I could make a suggestion? It sounds like you are interested in making several different changes to your diet. I think that's great! You may want to consider it as a step process.

Step #1 - reduce fat intake. "Typical" guidelines state that fat should be no more than 30% of your caloric intake. Your doctor may lower that, based on your family history.

Step #2 - lower sodium intake. My doctor said to stop adding salt to all foods. That's all for me. :) You may have a different recommendation.

Step #3 - increase fruit and veggie intake to 5-10 servings per day.

Step #4 - ???

I guess what I am trying to say is that it may be easier to swallow this elephant one bite at a time. ;) On Thursday you can develop a food plan with your doctor, and then you can step by step implement it into your life. I know that way would be easier for me. :)

To follow up on what geetey said, next time you see your doctor you may want to ask about a referral to a dietician. Many hospital dieticians have this as part of their duties (at least in our area) and also some special clinics.

If there is any sort of health issue - elevated cholesterol, need to manage blood glucose levels - particularly with any sort of diabetic or "pre" diabetic situation, high blood pressure, etc; there is a good probability that your health insurance will cover all or part of the cost. Even if they don't the cost compared to that of the potential long term health consequences is relatively low.

I've switched to Diet Rite too. I've always hated the taste of diet sodas! I like diet rite and it has no sugar, sodium or caffine can't beat that!

Changing habits is hard. I stopped all caffine a year ago. It's difficult at first, but I feel sooooo much better!

Good luck on making your changes!

I'm going to have to give Diet Rite a try! I didn't realize it had no sodium, etc. I'm so addicted to diet Pepsi. I wish I could give it up and I hate spending hard earned money on it!! Maybe I could slowly switch to Diet Rite and at least get off the sodium & caffiene, then get off it all together.

I mostly drink water, but once in a while I'll have a Diet Rite (thanks to previous recommendations here!) :)

Another Diet Rite drinker here. :) I like the Red Raspberry, but wish that our local stores would get the Black Cherry -- I'd love to try it!!

I do usually have one bottle of regular Dr. Pepper each day though. It's the one addiction that I can't seem to give up.

My favorite diet soda is Sunkist Diet Lemonade (it's fizzy, but with a great lemon taste). I love this stuff, and it is caffeine free!

Gotta have my CAFFEINE FREE DIET COKE!!!!

I've been addicted to it for about 20 years now! Before that it was Sugar-Free Dr. Pepper. I can't stand that now.:p I haven't drank (drunk?) a non-diet soda in at least 30 years! Way too sweet for me.:p

I'll drink Diet Pepsi if I have to, but I prefer Diet Coke.

I tried the Diet Rite Cola. BLECH!!!!! I like the White Grape flavor and the Red Raspberry flavor, though. I think there's one other one too, but I can't remember the name. But, that Cola? :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

My son likes it though, and he's not a diet soda drinker!! So, I buy it for him and he can have it all!!!

Hey Imgoingtodisney -

It's momster.

I had been drinking Diet Rite for over 5 years. We just prefer the taste.

Also, look for it at your local Sam's club. It tends to be much cheaper than at the grocery store. Ours runs $5.12/case.

Fresca rules. I also love Diet Cherry Coke. I eat a very low sodium diet as a rule (I just don't crave salt), and don't worry about a couple of sodas once in a while.

Some of the best and cheapest diet sodas I have ever had are Wegmans brand. With club card they are only 50 cents for a 2-liter bottle.

This is my first post on WISH. You are an inspiring group of people! I am trying to lose 20 pounds by my November WDW trip (yeah, sounds like plenty of time, but I am a very slow loser--even when sticking to 1200 calories and walking 5 miles a day).

I plan to drop in every day and learn from you guys and offer my help and support when I can.

Good luck to us all!

Imgoingtodisney, since you're from Massachusetts, see if your supermarket carries Waist Watchers sodas bottled by Adirondack. They have several flavors including a plain cola, orange, grape, raspberry gingerale, and my three favorites...vanilla creme soda, black cherry, and chocolate fudge. All contain, NO aspertame, NO sodium, NO caffine. They are sweetened with Splenda. Check out different places because most of the time, the different flavors are sold in single cans so you can mix and match and also try it without buying a whole six or twelve pack.
