Diet Mistakes

After reading an article I decided to make a list of my common diet mistakes. What are yours?
1. Not wearing pants with a zipper for more than a week.
2. Thinking work is the only priority.
3. Not figuring out how to have a moderate amount of chocolate on a regular basis.
4. Not getting rid of your “big” clothes as soon as they become too big.
5. Caring more about what other people think about how you look than about how you feel.
6. Not remembering that not only do big convenience stores at gas stations have healthier food alternatives than fast food, they also have cleaner bathrooms.
7. Not taking the time to make varied meals with healthy choices that also taste good.
8. Making a list of forbidden foods and convincing yourself that you will never eat them again.
9. Not recognizing that every now and then you need to splurge on food that is not the healthiest, obsessing and considering it a “bad” day, instead of saying that was good for a change but back to healthy choices.
10. Not having healthy snacks for when you are suddenly starving.
11. Not buying tempting foods in portion controlled packages. (i.e. nuts are healthy, and I can eat one small bag of cashews, but can not resist a can of them, fudgcycles I can deal with a half gallon of chocolate ice cream I can not.)
12. Looking for perfection and not progress.
13. Focusing too much on getting to a certain size for a certain event, and then convincing yourself you deserve a “break” after you make that goal for that event or if you don’t make it convincing yourself that it is not worth the struggle.
14. Thinking you should continue to lose weight while on vacation, instead of finding time to exercise (walking) so that you can maintain your weight while eating some extra vacation choices.
15. Waiting to buy new clothes until you are at your goal weight, instead of recognizing that you will feel and look better in clothes that fit during your weight loss journey.
16. Not making sure that splurges are worth the extra calories, an occasional wonderful chocolate dessert may be worth it, but a tasty cake late at night is not.
17. Avoiding seeing certain people or going swimming until you weigh less.
18. Not realizing that the other people in the exercise class are too focused on how they look to really care about how you look.
19. Not laughing enough.
20. Not finding someone to confide in, who understands what it means to lose weight and who will be there when you are feeling discouraged.

BUT HERE IS THE NUMBER 1 BIGGEST DIETING MISTAKE
Not remembering that the main reason to get fit is to be able to live a long and healthy life.

OK, you sucked me in, but what's number 1??? Did I miss something? ***Oops! I think I've got selective reading today! Got it now.***

::yes:: Well said Hairspray. ::yes::

What a wonderful post! I'll have to especially keep number one in mind. It can be easy sometimes to lose sight of the real reason weight loss is so important.

Excellent! Thanks for taking the time to share that with us. :)

That's a great list. I too have been guilty of getting in shape for a certain event months away, and then going totally off track diet and exercise wise afterwards. By the time I realize it, I have gained back weight and I feel so crappy and out of shape that it's years until I try again.

Losing weight permanently is more up to your brain than your body. You just can't slog along feeling deprived because you can't eat this or that...cuz at some point you'll attack the Fritos like some starving person! You have to include your favorites, just not in huge portions and not every day. Sweets, snacks, fast food, it all can be eaten. The food itself is not evil or bad.

Right now I'm trying to plan for something every 3 hours or so, that way I won't let myself get too hungry and be tempted. I can say to my stomach, "No stomach, you don't need that now. You recently had tuna, a banana, a glass of V-8, some soup, whatever it was you had within the past few hours...that cuts down on the emotional eating and makes eating what it is supposed to be: feeding the machine (your body) to keep it healthy and working well.

One day at a time...that's my healthy motto right now.::yes::

This is a great post! Thanks for sharing this list with us.
