Hi,

So I am looking for anyone that has tips on how to stick on a low-calorie diet while at Disney. I know this sounds crazy!

I am on the dining plan, and I am worried about getting a dessert with every table service. Is there any way the restaurants would substitute my dessert for an appetizer if I told them I am trying to watch my girlish figure? :littleangel:

Also, any other WDW diet tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I don't know if they will do that, but I do know that they are happy to offer fruit for dessert (I have food allergies and this is always often to me as an option).

Most disney locations will offer a fruit based dessert in place of one of their less healthy options.

They do NOT allow apps to be substituted for desserts for any reason, even medical ones.

I try to stay on my plan while at WDW. I allow myself a few treats, but it was surprisingly easy to do. Also, all the walking helps. I ended up losing 2 lbs the week I was there.

Do a little research ahead of time for the places you plan to eat. Try to eat as much like you would at home as possible. I'll order fish, chicken, things with whole grains, lots of veggies, salads, ask for sauces or dressings left off or on the side. Some places have fruit options or sugar-free desserts.

I think I've seen in other threads that they won't swap for an appetizer, but go for healthier dessert options, or skip it. At CS, I just read you can swap the dessert for a water. And it never hurts to ask - I think it depends on the restaurant and the server as to what they're willing to do.

Good luck!

Among my medical complications, I am an insulin dependent diabetic. One thing I ALWAYS forget at WDW is how much more active I am. Last trip DH had a meter and we traveled 6 - 10 miles a DAY on foot. I have to remember to take far less insulin compared to my 45 minute daily walks.

You will be burning far more calories at WDW than you probably do in your regular routine.

Do you have access to an outside grocery or would you consider food delivery? DH and I eat only one meal a day at WDW restaurants....especially now that the food has gone downhill.

I have healthy food and snacks in the fridge which are a great way to manage calories...or in my case....carbs.

Portion size is key. At WDW it is soooo easy to get caught up in the food. I divide my portion in half and ask for a smaller plate to put it on. Get dressings on the side or ask if they have a lighter version. Most of time I would skip dessert all together. My favorite thing to snack on is the fruit bowls available for a snack credit. Really we did so much walking last trip I didn't gain anything. I also came back from a 4 day Wonder cruise without gaining.

#1 rule is portion control.

If you go to a buffet, pay attention to what you put on your plate and how much of it.

If you are at a restaurant where you order an entree, don't eat it all. Eyeball your meat to be about palm-sized for 4oz. Be careful of sauces and dressings, and, of course, sugarry drinks.

But, also consider this: You are at Disney, you will be walking.

I was on a low calorie diet (still am, actually!) at WDW in July. I behaved myself the first 2 days, but then stopped paying attention on day 3. Still ended up 3 pounds lighter when I came home.

You will NOT be allowed to substitute an appetizer for your dessert. I wish they would offer this, though!
I was able to get a cappucino at Mama Melrose in place of dessert, though. It didn't have any sugar added which was great because I don't use sugar in my coffee. So you may be able to do something like that instead of dessert, or just ask for fresh fruit like others have said.

i'd say the majority of appetizers are worse for you than a dessert so even if you tried..it'd be a futile effort! :)

just ask for fruit or...don't get any dessert at all?
