---I'm still nursing my baby. (He's 9 months.) I put on many pounds since Christmas and need to shed them. Is there anything I need to be careful of, while dieting, since I'm still nursing. (He is now eating baby food and some soft table food.)
---We were at WDW this weekend, and seeing myself in the room in those full length mirrors at Pop Century, I realized I can't wait any longer to shed these pounds! I look like Mrs. Doubtfire!

You burn 500 calories per day when they are full fledge nursing....you might check with La Leche League or your lactation consultant to find out what to do with older babies. I'm guessing that until they are a year or so old--that you still need the extra 500 calories if that is their primary source of nutrition. Maybe each month cut it down by 100 calories. So first month--extra 500, 2nd month extra 400....3rd month (baby is 1 year) extra 300. And then keep it about there until baby is beginning to wean. DD2 was 21 months when I did South Beach and I didn't consciously remember to add calories--but I did eat whenever I was hungry.

So calculate whatever calories you would have to eat to safely lose the weight you want...and then add an extra 500 calories to that.

If you are not careful, the result will be that your milk starts to dry up--if that happens, it means you are not eating enough.

Regarding South Beach Diet if that is a chosen route for you--you will need to skip phase I and start Phase II. Atkins would not be a good choice for you b/c as a mommy you still need the carbs. My friends milk began to dry up on SBD...but for me, it didn't. My baby was older and didn't rely on nursing as much.

HTH.

When I was nursing DS#1 I did Weight Watchers for nursing moms and loved it. While nursing DS#2 I am having trouble sticking with anything. I did South Beach (starting on Phase 2 like Lisa said), I have now (as of yesterday) gone back to Weight Watchers. I plan on doing the Flex points plan, but I want to try to stay away from white "stuff" (bread, pasta, sugar..)

Remember your biggest job right now is to feed your baby, so you don't want to cut back too much. You can still eat healthy and lose weight (the weight loss should be slow) while you are nursing.

My baby is the same age - well, born 5 -24, so not quite. I am nursing her and doing flex points with weight watchers. I am eating the ten extra points. I think I will do that until she weans. Problem is I keep cheating and not losing weight - weekends are so hard! Anyway, I have about ten pounds to go! You can diet and nurse - just don't look at it as a diet - just a new way of eating healthy! BTW, How was the baby at the parks? We go in April.

I did WW's while nursing DD- Gee that was 13 years ago!!!!

It worked really good and you get to eat quite a bit! They give you more points while nursing.

Thanks for the responses. DS did great at the parks. He's a real trooper. We have the vcr tape Mickey's Fun Songs Beach Party at WDW from when our other DS(11) was small. I think he recognized things from the tape. He went crazy waving to Ariel at the Voyage of the Little Mermaid at MGM. And he just loved the characters. When we were watching the video, I kept saying, "Wow look how big Mickey is." It must have helped because he wasn't afraid of any of the characters. DS(11) was afraid of the Alien part of the great movie ride the last time he went on it, the baby wasn't phased by any of it.

Ack I'm there and not nursing anymore haven't for awhile now. DD weaned herself at 10 months she refused to nurse. But in that first 9 months I was hungry all the time. It sucks because at 2 weeks post partum I was 5 lbs from my pre-pregnant weight and gained most back. :( :guilty:

I'm about 25 lbs from pre-pregnant weight right now.
