We may have to cancel our Dec. trip for the first time in 13 straight years! Can't justify the cost to drive the diesel and 5th wheel from NC. May end up staying in off-site time share instead

Hope not, we'll just have to wait and see what happens by then. We love the Fort!!:grouphug:

We are at 4.05 a gal. here, and it keeps creeping up,
I think we can plan a Fort trip close to election time,,ya know dang good 'n well that the fuel prices will miraculously come down for a short while.

These fuel prices are the new normal. I bet it's $5.00 bucks a gallon by July.

Diesel is getting bad, but try driving 2 cars that require premium.

Diesel this morning $4.09
Premium yesterday when I filled the BMW $4.49

As for canceling my trip to WDW. NO WAY! I live outside St Louis. It's almost exactly 1000 miles from my house to the Fort.

The difference in fuel from January to today is about $0.70 around here...

I get 10 mpg towing so my trip will be about 200 gallons. That's only $140 extra in fuel costs. For what this trip is costing, if $140 will make a big difference, I probably shouldn't be going in the first place.

Another way to look at it is I'll eat 2 more meals at the camper instead of a sit down resturant and I'm probably ahead.

Agreed :thumbsup2

Hopefully, the OP can cut somewhere else to cover the increase in fuel cost. Christmas/December at WDW and FW is amazing and what a disappointment it would be to miss it, especially with it being a 13 year tradition

Hey from outisde STL ourselves.... :)

I drive a Ford PS... filled up the other day it was $125..:headache:

We have never driven to WDW... so its 1000 miles? How long does that take?

SWA for the 4 of us is currently $1400 or a little less... :upsidedow

$4.10 In North Florida this morning. I bought an old civic to drive to work in. 38 mpg vice 16 mpg in the Dodge.

Oh, no! Will you be happy off site? I know I wouldn't be.

Hi there,

Well, I don't know anything else since we've been going at least twice a year now for sometime. DVC and Fort Wilderness. This year we have the Disney cruise in the mix as well in September (gift from my company). BUT, Disney at Christmas is our most favorite time.

My SIL has a time share right outside of Downtown Disney and she offered. We can drive our VW bug down and save lots on gas. We can still cook and eat breakfast and some meals in the TS just like we do at the camper, and we are AP holders, so parking is free. However, I'm sure it would feel different. Even if we don't stay in FW, you know we will keep up the tradition and walk through FW for the decorations.

We're not happy about it, but if it means not going at all, then we will learn to like it.

We've done so much Disney this year and remodeling on our house, that we really should be more frugal for our end of year trip. However, I will NEVER cancel totally, it means too much to us. When we were at the Boardwalk in March we took a bounceback offer for Pop Century as another backup plan :thumbsup2

One way or another, we surely hope to SEE you there the first week in December, along with all my other DIS friends. :santa:

We are already committed and we're leaving on 4/27 no matter what. The MH gets about 7.5 mpg .Figure it's going to cost at least $1700 for gas down and back, as the distance is almost 3000 miles round trip. We are getting SO ripped off!

I would probably try to use the timeshare, if it were me. The price of diesel could be over $6/gal by the end of the year, if not higher.

Hope you enjoy the visit, no matter where you stay.

I actually live in Edwardsville, so I'm a bit closer to WDW than an "average" outside StL resident

I try to fill up in Missouri. Saves about $0.15 a gallon. I have a F350 dually. It took $135 to fill it last week. Thankfully I just use it to tow things.

We have never driven to WDW... so its 1000 miles? How long does that take?
It's not a bad drive. GPS says about 16 hours total. With family, I do it in 2 days. We try to get to south GA for an over night. Then it's a short 3-4 hour drive to the Fort. I have driven straight through when I'm by myself, but I race sports cars all over the country. Driving 10-15 hours isn't that bad.

SWA for the 4 of us is currently $1400 or a little less... :upsidedow
I seriously considered staying at a resort this trip and driving a car down. With the 40% off moderates they had last fall, considering fuel and room, it was even money. Values would save a few $100... Then I factored in food. We typically eat breakfast at the camper and a few lunches and dinners. The food is the deal breaker.
I also looked at flying down, but that put us way over what my wife wanted to spend. So we'll pull the camper down and have a great time at the fort in about 40 days!

Leaving our 5er home this trip. Staying at Windsor Hills in a pool house. So much cheaper when we combine with both of our kids families too. Last time we stayed at the fort and they all stayed in ASMo (what a place that is...one little room to sit around in! :scared1:) Everyone always ended up at our camper for all their meals and it got very crowded. For us the price of the house vs. the price of camping and the diesel to tow down makes the difference between going and not going and we REALLY want to go. GS wants to see Harry Potter this year too-so add that Universal trip in the mix.

I was committed once.

I escaped,,they still haven't found me, :thumbsup2

That's were our gasser works for us. We can drop to 55 and save but not with that diesel. Off sit not that much cheaper and not the fun. December is not the time to get tight with yourself, go and enjoy. Like the man said eat in more.

That's why we cancelled our 1st Fort trip, decided it would be cheaper to stay in value resort, yes i was so upset, but crap happens !!!!!!!!:littleangel:

It's about 2,000mi RT for us and I get right at 10mpg so that's 200 gal of diesel for the trip down and back at $4/gal that $800 and even at $6/gal that's only an additional $400 and our average bill for a 45 to 60 day trip with 40 to 50 days at FW averages from 6 to 8 grand so $400 is sort of lost. Also, we spend about $1200 in eating out (about 3 maybe 4 dinners and 8 to 10 lunches). We also buy a lot of gifts, etc. for the holidays/special occasions ... anywhere from $500 to almost $1000.

Diesel is killing me too! I am hoping to make it thru without raising my rental prices. I have made it 3 years without an increase. This fuel situation is making me angry.

Slowing down with a diesel will save on milage too. On our April trip we saw as much as 2 miles/gallon difference between 55 mph and 65 mph. When we slowed to 55 mph, we got a little over 12 mpg.
