I just came from the DVC Rent/Trade Board. As I was reading several of the For rent postings, I noticed that MANY of the people renting had very few posts? Why is that?
(I fell like Andy Rooney-"Didja ever wonder why...?"etc.)

I think it's time I say goodnight-I'm getting punchy!

I think it's because the DISBoards are known as the place to go in order to rent points. Those people are not interested in joining our community. All they want is to make money or get a good deal.

I think some of those folks are actually regulars here, posting rentals under a different name.
I think some posters here don't want folks to know if, or how much they rent.

Just a hunch... and a bit of observation... :magnify:

It may also be relatively new DVC members trying to get something for points they cannot use.

It is not uncommon to have "extra" points when you first buy in - especially if you buy while vacationing on site. Some people are fortunate enough to get resale contracts with banked points. It those expire before the new owner can use them, many new owners will try to rent them.

Best wishes -

I guess that could be true, although I'd think the fact that someone was a long-time member would be a marketing plus, and someone with only a handful of posts would worry some renters. However, that could be overcome with good references.

I also think some of those folks are in the rental business. When you see someone with 2 posts and 700 points to rent, I don't think they are either new or casual renters. They're in business to rent points. The thing about that I don't understand is why someone in business to rent points would rent them here, rather than eBay or somewhere else where they could get a better return.

No fees to pay here.

A large audience of potential customers/repeat WDW visitors frequent these boards.

Plus I think (based on other posts I've read over the past few years) that those "in the business" rent their points for at least $13/point - even more if the reservation is for a hard to secure time/unit. Not sure those who use ebay net all that much more than a saavy owner can get using the DIS.

You sure may be right! I see one on eBay for 5 weeknights in an OKW studio (Sunday-Thursday, of course) with a buy-now price of $575.

That is valid from January until 9/1/06, except for the Easter period and other holidays. If someone decides they want to go in June, during Magic Season, that's only $5.23 per point. I think the lister made a BIG mistake!

I actually think I may snag that listing -- it's cheaper than my points cost me!

That thought did occur to me. I agree w/ JimmIa that I would feel more comfortable renting from someone who has a bit of history here.
Now Carol, regarding those "extra" points! I have never had extra points-My motto:
Got points? Use 'em!

LOL, nezy - that's why I doubt I will ever rent my points.

An OKW studio in Magic Season is 55 points, so that listing is $10.45 per point.

ETA: By my calculations, the seller would make only $540 after eBay and PayPal take their fees.

Oooops! My bad. My default on my magic Caskbill planner is a one-bedroom! You're right.

Good thing I didn't just snap that up, huh?

I needed a few extra points for a trip that we took all our kids and grandchild last January. I posted on the rent and trade board and rented from someone that had very few posts. She lived in Florida and had just purchased and wasn't able to use all her points. The rent went very well, I paid through paypal and she transferred the points into my account. I also have rented some points that we got when we bought our add on because we didn't need them this year and it helped me be able to purchase the add-on. I don't think all the people on the rent-trade board are just trying to make money. You never know someone else's circumstances, so we shouldn't judge just because they don't have many posts.

I agree with you. The issue is trust, which is required for any DVC point rental.

ONE way (probably NOT the best way) to tell something about the person you're renting from (or to) is to look at their posts. In addition to getting a feel for a person's personality, you can also get an idea whether they actually know what they are doing. If they only have a handful of posts, and those are all offering rentals, you really can't tell much about the person.

Obviously, there are many other ways to establish trust. The best way is undoubtedly to get references from people they've done business with previously. In fact, if I were renting, that would be the first thing I'd look for. Other possibilities are things like eBay feedback, etc. Plus, you get some idea of what a person is like just in the normal back-and-forth that goes with renting.

It's always been my opinion that people who rent points here (in either direction) are reputable people. The biggest question I would have, either of a DVC owner or someone trying to rent from an owner, is how well they understand the process and the differences between renting a DVC reservation and making a cash reservation.

I doubt if someone would rip anyone off intentionally, but if both parties don't fully understand the restrictions that can come up, a problem is much more likely to occur. (Like me using a one-bedroom points value, for example... )

I think many of them are lurkers that may have been reading these boards for months. They see all the trip reports, etc. and are inspired to plan a trip using rented points...at that time, they finally have a reason to post.

We have been DVC members since 1995. I learned about these boards when we were on the return Panama cruise. I had known it was possible to transfer points among members (but really didn't know how to go about it), but never realized there was a market for renting. We have used our points to take two 7 night cruises, but with the number of points going up on them we have paid cash for the last 2 and ours for 2007. I would just bank our points that year and try to plan a couple of trips to use them. We planned a trip this past June (orig for 35 ended up being 24), but we made an add on purchase of 240 points at SSR to give our family members their rooms as a gift. Counting our stay at VB & OKW it was over 700 pts our original plan would have been a little over a 1000 points. I knew that many of our family members wouldn't be able to go if they had to pay for their rooms--so this was our gift to them. We still had 7 to back out saying they couldn't afford to go. If I would have realized that I could have rented the points from another member, I would have jumped on that chance. But in this purchase of additional points, I just figure that we will have to travel more and will be able to once DS starts college in 2 years. I do know that we are blessed financially to have been able to do this and we really like spending time with our families. I answered a request on the rent boards and rented out 281 of our OKW points. Everyting went very nicely--no problems. I will also be checking them and trying to help someone else out. We still have almost 500 points that we won't be using until 2008 for a trip to WDW. We have a 4/7/07 7 nt. WC DCL (cash) and want to go to Hawaii for 2 weeks, hopefully 3 weeks in summer 2007. I want to rent my points to pay for these. It is over 80 points per night for OV at Mauna Lani--about $500 for cash.

I am sure that there are DVC members out there who rent their points just to try to make money. But $10 today (maybe not in the future) is a good rental IMO. It covers your purchase price /50 = a couple of dollars more than dues. Also it will let your vaction dollars sometimes go further than an exchange using your DVC points.

There are probably others out there like me who have just joined the 20th century--we never had internet in our home until last year. My DS needed it for so many school projects and I got tired of taking him to the library.

But we truly love our DVC and without it, I don't think that we would have been able to take the same quality or quantity of vacations as we have over the last 10 years. To me the many memories we have and especially the trips where we have invited others to travel with us mean so much to us.

I also want to say for those of you that have intentions of planning those bigger trips and inviting family to come--don't put them off. When we got back from our June trip, my father-in-law was diagnoised with lung cancer (it doesn't look good for him). But it really made us happy that we had done this trip. I just finished a 52 page album of this trip for their Christmas gift.

So please don't think ill of us "newbies" that rent our points, we may just have other vacation plans that don't include DVC this year or next. It doesn't make us "bad". Cherish your family time and your Disney memories, only today is given. You never know about tomorrow.

From my experience, many are lurkers and others don't post very often. And given the way they're geneally treated when they post, I can't say I blame them. If the BBS truly wanted them and welcomed them, they would be more active. Truth is many of them likely know the ins and outs of the system far better than most who do post. And I bet they could offer valuable insights into the ways the system really works if the regulars truly wanted to listed.

What is a BBS please?

I think it stands for bulletin boards.

I also noticed that some people only post messages pertaining to renting/transferring points. I assumed that was the business they were in.

I can understand why people would rent/transfer their points, it is better than losing them. Especially, if you only have a few points left over for the year.

Oh, I am happy to say that I just made reservations for my second trip to WDW. SSR here we come!!!!!!!!!!! July 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Holidays.

My SIL is one who has only posted to rent their points, so she has a pretty low post count (I just checked - it is 7). My DB is pretty 'high-maintenance' and while SIL will lurk a bit, she doesn't have the inclination, or time, to post just for the sake of boosting her 'count'. Another indicator of 'stability' is how long one has been a member. I've seen some VERY high thread counts by some who have only belonged a month or so. I think the most SIL has rented at a time is 150 pts. - not much to make a business out of.
