Did your parents go to college?

No idea if my dad attended College. I was never made aware of it and no record of it.

My mom went to Nursing School. Not sure if that counts as College, as her Nursing School was not affiliated with any College. It was a three year program in Canada, taught entirely at a hospital with none of the usual College type General Education classes. My mom was very disappointed when the 3 year nursing schools closed in 1997. Now nurses get a BSN, which included two years of general education requirements, and two years of nursing training......."two year wonders" she called them since they got one year less nursing training.
My wife got her RN certification in Canada as well, I think I remember her saying it was three years and was trained in Montreal General for that. When she moved down to Vermont she went to the University of Vermont and got her BS in nursing and two years later got her Masters. She also got a Masters in Gerontology from U-Mass in Boston.

I think my mom felt a Masters degree was more along the lines of what people looking to work in Administration would get. She, of course did her 30 hours of continuing education that was required every two years to renew her license. But the last half of her 40 years as a Surgical Nurse she was on the Orthopedic and Ophthalmologic surgery teams so she got sent to a lot of training programs put on the the manufacturers of the equipment used. She retired in 1985, which was the year Medicare started allowing cataract surgery to be done on an out patient basis. She got a couple of offers from Doctors that opened their own outpatient clinics when she retired, but she decided 40 years was enough. Sort of like she considered working on the Medical Centers on Cruise Ships, but decided if she was on a cruise ship, she was going to be relaxing on the deck, not working.

Their website says it closed in 1997. She was last there in 2006 for her 60th class reunion and toured the current facilities.
Highlight of her trip was the President of her class noting that there were 110 students in her class, 101 were still alive, and 90 were in attendance. "Not bad considering we are all in our 80's, and we are the generation that grew up cooking everything in 3 inches of bacon grease."
correct. Diploma program ended in 1995 and Bachelor’s in 1997.
Cool that she got back here in 2006. That must have meant a lot to her.

My dad worked full time days to pay for his night classes and got an Associates. He worked for 40 years as an engineer for Philips Medical. My mom went to X-Ray school for I believe 2 years and was a mammographer.

My dad's parents only made it to 8th grade (grandfather) and 6th grade (grandmother). After that they had to drop out to help out at home. I am actually not sure about my mom's parents. I doubt they finished high school though.

No. My parents did not graduate from high school, either. My dad got a job at age 17 (in 1929) to support his family during the Depression (11 people). He worked for that company until he was 62 years old. My mother was born in 1915 and quit school to get a job. Times were different then.

My father's parents believed that only the oldest boy and girl should be educated. Dad was the second son and his oldest sister was younger than him. After the navy, Dad got an Associate's Degree.

My Mom's parents believed that it wasn't necessary to educate girls even though my Mom was in the top 10 of her class. She went to secretarial school until she found a job to keep until she was married. Little did they know that 2 income families would become the norm and even without a degree, my Mom got into management in a bank.

When my DGP was sick, Mom was able to translate what the doctors were telling him. He then started to regret that he'd not let her go to school. He realized she could have been a doctor and he saw how much better her life would have been without the financial struggles that my parents had when I was growing up.

My parents never held any of us back from pursuing our educations after HS.

yes - my parents met in college. Both my brother and I also went to college. I am the first in my family to have a bachelors and a masters degree.

My Dad only graduated from HS because some friends of his had parents who were teachers and they took him under their wing. He probably would've been suspended a ton and then dropped out if they didn't keep him going. College wasn't even a thought. Where he grew up, the day after graduation you either went down the mine or you got out of town. He left and eventually learned a trade.

My mother went to college for 1 year but was homesick and lovesick. She moved to DC and got a job with the federal government, moving in with one of my aunts. About a year later, she married Dad.

My father was born in 1917. He graduated from high school and went to work as a interoffice delivery boy in one of the banks in Boston. Ended up being an assistant vice president of the same bank before he died in 1970. I don't believe any of his siblings or either parent went to college.

My mother was born in 1928 and went to college. She wanted to major in Animal Science but UMass wouldn't let women into that program, so she majored in home ec at Nasson. She also had teaching credentials, so for a while worked as a teacher until she married my dad. My grandmother graduated from high school, and my grandfather was a doctor.

Mom went to University of Miami and Dad was in the Marine Corps at a young age. His education was being in 3 wars.

No. My dad graduated high school, but my Mom dropped out of 10th grade to go to work.
