The male gypsy moth can "smell" the virgin female gypsy moth from 1.8 miles away.

My DH had a college summer job for the Dept of Agriculture trapping gypsy moths with gypsy moth pheromones (chemicals of attraction). For about a year afterward, gypsy moths would literally flock to him! It was weird, but they could still sense the pheromones!
I married him anyway (once the pheromones wore off!!!)
