Did you know about non-Disney DVC resales before your first DVC purchase?

-Tony

BTW this is a multiple choice poll. Please choose one from items 1 & 2 and one from items 3 & 4.

Yes but the 13 dollars a point buy back from Disney was to good to pass up when we purchased in 2000.

When I bought, it was either BWV direct or OKW resale. There were very few BWV resales available at that time (9/99). My plan was to stay at OKW in May and BWV in early December. OKW was cheaper as a resale but I wanted that 11 month window for BWV. I also thought BWV would retain a higher value. So I bought BWV direct.

I ALMOST bought at SSR...papers were in my hand, signed and ready to go back...and, then I thought..."I really like the other resorts in the book much better. Maybe I should do some research. Maybe there are Disney resales on the market (although, I couldn't IMAGINE anyone selling DVC)." Well, I found the disboards, and became "hooked". I immediately decided I did not want SSR, and went with a BWV resale...the rest is history!!

I'm glad I did...I definitely would've been someone who bought at SSR "just to get in".

We went with HH resale over SSR for the following reasons:

We live in NC and can drive to HH. We'd figure we'd alternate summers at HH and WDW. To get HH in the summer, the 11 month window was a priority. We didn't see the advantage of having the 11 month window at either OKW (no need for a GV) or SSR (DTD view).

When we book at WDW 7 months out, we're going to try to get the smaller resorts too. We'd figure we could always get either OKW or SSR (especially when SSR is fully built out) and waitlist the smaller ones. But even if we didn't get BCV/BWV/VWL, be happy with staying at either OKW or SSR.

When you figure in closing costs (and even include mf's from now til May when the SSR mf's start), we are paying less than $75 pp, plus we're getting banked points. OKW would be roughly $80 and SSR $85.

So why pay more to get the same accomodations?

We purchased in January 1995 when only OKW was available and hadn't considered a resale. I suspect there were few if any contracts available at that time.

It does make me wonder when the first OKW resale was submitted for ROFR and when the first resale closed?

We were planning to buy SSR but then found this website. We took the advice of numerous posters to "buy where we want to stay" and bought a BWV resale. We are so glad we did!

The first thing we did even before speaking with a guide was to research the subject on the web. i would suspect alot of those who didnt know about resales maybe purchased early on when maybe there werent web sites dedicated to dvc and its resale, whereas today any search engine will turn up enough results to keep you reading all day.

Thanks to this board, we were aware of the resale market. We still purchased our original contract through Disney because it was the only way to get VWL. We bought BWV through resale later on.

My guess is that the vast majority of DVC owners were not aware of the resale market since the Disney employees won't be bringing it up!

When I ordered the video last June, I asked the guide about why buy SSR when resales are cheaper. He kept mentioning why buy those for $84 (before the price increase) when you could get 12 extra years for $85.

i think maybe that was the case, but how can you not be aware of it now a days? One ounce of research will show there a resale market, its not like its a big secret

Because most people who buy DVC probably do about one ounce less research than you suggest.

Seriously... I think most timeshares (DVC and non-DVC) are purchased "on the spot" when people are in enjoying themselves on vacation. They can see themselves doing this every year, and the sales pitches are designed with this in mind.

My guess is that the demographics of this web board population research more than most.

We were not aware of the resale availability when we purchased OKW in '97, and only became aware of it AFTER we did another 150 point add on in '98. Not sure it would have made a huge difference then anyway, since our original contract was just $62.50 a point.

hmm maybe but I find that very hard to believe,

I do agree that most here do more research than others, its probably why we are here in the first place

I work with two different people that purchased Cancun timeshares on an impulse. They each have the same story. They were having a good time on vacation, with tequila flowing through their blood streams. Then they happened to attend a presentation while their inhibitions were down. Next thing they knew they were timeshare owners. And they each sold a couple years later at a substantial loss.

I think it's a pretty common story.

I think that might be true for many timeshares, but DVC seems to be a bit different. We actually sought out the sales people rather than the other way around. Our first stay at OKW was a discount given by our guide when we expressed an interest in buying. I don't think they do that anymore. We went to several other timeshare sales meetings before purchasing DVC, and found them all to be too high pressure and not filled with good information. It made our DVC decision much easier. We were just looking for a less expensive way to do it, but id didn't take rocket science to figure out DVC was a cut above, and therefore was a bit more expensive. I'm not sure resale was too active when we purchased.

I have to admit that I think I had a Mickey Premuim Bar flowing through my veins when I purchased. My inhibitions were definitely lower.;)

Ive heard of the same stories, but buying impulsively and not knowing about resales arent quite the same thing. You can buy a dvc impulsively while at Disney while all swooped up in the magic knowing full well there are resales available.

We were researching both our OKW resale and BCV direct at the same time. Got a lot of great information right here before we did anything.
