Did you hear what Bob Costas said last night during the opening ceremony?

I can't remember which country it was, but 2 ladies were wearing rather elaborate clothing. Quite pretty with headpieces too, IMO. Well Bob Costas, chattering away, (to hear himself talk?) said they looked confident, probably would have to be in get-ups like that. I thought that was rather rude. It probably was a national costume and hardly worthy of being called a get-up.
I thought he was kinda out of place to say it. Wonder if he was reprimanded.

I honestly tried to block out his and Katie's trite attempts at banter- awful! They were definitely not on top of thier form, were they?

We had the option to watch it in HDTV last night.. we both thought the comentary was awful and down right rude at points so we were thrilled that when we switched to the HDTV channel, that a different set of commentators were there and not near as awful or rude.

After watching last night, I told DH that if I were Katie Couric,
I'd have kicked Costas in the sweets and taken his mic from
him. He was an embarrasment. He pronounced countries wrong,
insulted clothing/costumes,"what about that skirt!?"
He's was an indiot last night and never should get this kind
of job again.

Bob Costos is an idiot. My favorite stupid comment from him was when he referred to Belize as the "Island Nation of Belize". I didn't realize they separated from Mexico and Guatamala overnight.
He almost ruins the Olympics. I wish NBC would get rid of him.

Interesting...we switched to the HD commentary for a few minutes until we heard one of those idiots talking about how good-looking one of the women athletes was. While making fun of the costumes IS tacky, I think checking out how hot the athletes are is tackier.

Glad to have found this post - it was PAINFUL to watch!

I also really didn't appreciate his political comments either. I thought he said something to the effect when America got huge cheers, that of course, the people here are kind of big enough to put politics aside, and just cheer these athletes for who they are, and not where they come from (mind you, these are my words, but this was the message I got from him and I may have misunderstood it). I think he was implying that USA would normally have gotten booed because everybody hates us, but the people watching took the high road and decided to just appreciate the athletes for who they are.

I think that people appreciate America way more than alot of the press gives us credit for. And the cheers were for the athletes as well as for our country.

Glad to see that even our sports announcers can be 'politically neutral' (not!).

I never heard either of them say that, but I did skip a little of the parade of nations when I saw it the first time (I missed the Ps). I thought the commentators were just fine.

I get sick of the cameramen zooming in on all the hot women athletes and ignoring the hot guys!

I totally agree! I thought Bob and Katie were completely awful. Their "bantering" was some of the worst I have heard!

Bob Costas has become obnoxious. Pretty much mimics Katie Couric on the Today Show! They were a good pair. Just too bad they were on tv spewing their lack of professionalism. Makes me embarassed for the US.

I agree with lass3888 - it was painful.

I'm just sorry I don't remember the exact quote. It was during the Parade of Nations, but I don't recall which country. We tuned in, heard the comment, and turned it right back to Katie and Bob.

Lesser of two evils, IMO.

The only thing I remember is the female commentator saying when looking at one flag bearer, "Wow, look at her!" And then a few seconds later, "She couldn't look more proud." But that's not saying how hot she was; I probably missed the comment.

I thought the comment about Mongolia leaving the furs at home was on the tacky side, personally. There were several other comments that made us look at each other and shake our heads though.

I found them completely offensive. I'm surprised no one mentioned what Costas said when Saudi Aracia was parading by.

He said, something to the effect of, "Ever since learning the lesson of 9/11, Americans have become more conscious of Muslim society."

Learning the freaking lessons of 9/11? No, the media isn't liberal! He, in so many words, blamed AMERICA for 9/11. What a complete **** up!

Has anyone seen "Best In Show" ? It was THAT awful.

I am sure they are getting slammed with mail. Many comments were tasteless and just rude.
