I graduated with about $1500 on student load debt. I really did not even need it but I took it to get through one summer school session.
Payment was $62.00 per month.
My mom was a single mom with 4 kids in college (1 in Grad school, 1 in Medical school, and 2 of us in undergrad college). She helped out as much as she could but I knew I would have to work.
For all of college I worked 30-35 hours a week while taking a full load of classes. It was very difficult and I missed out of the traditional school experience. I am absolutely adamant that will not happen to our kids.
We started saving for their college before they were ever born. I want my DD's to work during the summer for spending money but I want them to enjoy college more than I did.
DH worked during the summers and between that and his parents help, he never worked during school and did not have any school debt.

and we are still paying for it because when we were younger we deferred the payments for years. live and learn.
