Did you design your own cake or go with a DFTW one?

Hi girls!

I have just recieved a disc with pictures of all the cakes.

Tbh, I'm not really taken by any of them. Am I just being fussy? I found quite a lot of them to be gawdy and old fashioned.

Would some of you mind posting pics of your cakes or your ideas?

We found a picture online of a cake we loved. We were going for a fall/Tim Burton kind of cake. The picture we sent was of a 3 tier cake. We only needed 2 tiers because we had about 50 guests. We sent them the pic and they sent us back a quote of $450 for a 2 tier version! It was exactly what I wanted to spend and they did an amazing job recreating our cake. We went with our own. Disney was extremely accomodating and as our budget became finalized we tweaked it a bit to save on costs. Ultimately we ended up with our original design. Here is the inspiration picture:

I consulted w/ Toppers w/ Glitz to design my own which incidentally now is a DFTW cake. I think a lot of brides design or combine cakes to make them unique to their event- so don't feel restricted by what is on the disc or DFTW website.

We are hoping for 3 small cakes like the pic below with different light shades of pink and the anemone flowers on them but if it's over our budget we'll just do a one 2 tier cake

We are going to design ours. Yesterday Carly posted some Disney cakes that were customs on her website and I'm taking pieces from a few to make our own. I had like some from other designers but I'm nervous about Disney recreating them. At least these I know Disney has already done.

I'm not a fan of Disney's wedding cake inspiration pictures either (saw them on a thread on here). But I love the cakes in the Cake Chatter's form. So I know they are capable of making awesome cakes.

I'm surfing the whole web for inspiration and tweeking a bit. I think that's the norm these days.

I got to design our cake from scratch. It was nothing like any of their previous cakes (believe me, we went through a lot of pictures and ideas!). I think it turned out wonderfully!

A combination of a bakelite radio, sunburst mirror, and an art deco light. We had talked about waterfalls before and the chef managed to work that idea in too!

We are sort of designing our own. After I spoke with Rosie, she asked about the cake and we had honestly not picked one out yet (yes our wedding is in less than 3 months!). I told her I didn't really like any of them so she mentioned just having a white fondant 2 layer cake and lining the bottom layers with the same ribbon we are using to wrap our bouquets and boutineers. And she's adding fresh yellow Gerber daisies. It's perfect!!! We are paying $45 for the extras which isn't bad in my opinion because we didn't want to purchase a whole new cake when one comes with the package.

Hope this helps!! Talk with Rosie about possibly changing the current cakes to better suit your wedding's style. It will be cheaper than designing your own cake from scratch.

I designed ours because I desperately wanted a square cake and I didn't want the M&M topper on it (they gave it to us in a separate box). It was pricey - 4+ years ago and we paid $265 - for 8 guests (12 total if you count us, MOH and Rev. Jack who had a piece), but I didn't care about the cost - I LOVED our cake!! It was exactly what I envisioned with edible flowers that I still have in our freezer

None of the cakes on the CD were our taste. We had them copy one we found in a magazine, and DH made the topper.

I will be the odd one out, we liked the disney options! We are using the original style of the mad hatter cake.

Ours will only be 2 tiers, and we didn't really give much direction on the colours/style, other than to incorporate our colour scheme somewhat. I'm sure it will turn out nice!

We went with one of Disney's cakes, the Destination Castle Cake. But, IMHO it didn't look like the picture, anyway, since I requested fresh floral. I think when you personal the colors and flowers, it starts to look custom regardless...although some of these custom cakes are amazing!

To give you an idea, I ordered a Mad Hatter for our tea party and only told them it was a Mary Poppins theme. That was my only direction. Here's what they came up with on their own.

We designed our cake around the Lenox 50th anniversary porcelain Cinderella Castle. I wanted the cake to be very simple with small pink and yellow flowers that were not fresh floral. I thought they might be fondant, but they were made out of shimmery sugar and were even "tipped" to look real. The draping is really the only aspect that came from the Disney cake CD.

That is a great idea! I'll have to come up with a reason to have my Siamese cats on a cake...maybe a birthday trip one year!
