Did we get enough points?

So we put an offer in on a resale contract of 100pts at CCV. I did the math over and over with the intention that our family of 3 would go every other year or every 3 years with bringing additional family/friends. Most likely we will go for 5-6 night trips. That’s how we arrived at 100 points. But now I’m thinking maybe we should have gone with 150 or even more if we wanted to go another year rather than every 2-3. My main question is if we don’t use the points one year is it worth counting on renting them out every few years, do you really break even when you rent? We aren’t looking to make money, just not lose it.

It really depends on how many you rent and the rate at the time. But if you're planning on every 2-3 years, the flexibility to bank and borrow should be a good way for you to use your points effectively. That being said, depending on the type of room you prefer, time of year, and how many friends you hope to bring, 100 points sounds like it might be a tad light on points. But you can certainly make it work - you might just have less family and friends coming than you are thinking now!

Very good point. But beware, we've added on several times since 1993!!
The only thought we had about adding on was should we just go with more now and Direct then in order to get membership benefits as opposed to resale.

Keep in mind that borrowing and banking can be limited as is the case now with the 50% rule for borrowing.

Having the 300 points every 3 years is not guaranteed. But, those additional larger trips are not a regular plan, start smaller and go from there.

To get your blue card you need to hit the magic 150 direct. It’s possible that number will go up in future years too

i bought 150 direct for the blue card. Will decide if I add on and how once gfv2 prices announced

your resale contract will not be eligible for a blue card even if you were to buy 1,000 points

Very true. Keep forgetting about that recent adjustment on borrowing - keep hoping they're going to get rid of that reduction sometime soon, but that's not guaranteed. I guess they might keep it for awhile, and it does impact planning.

Yeah, that’s another thing I’m worried about, if we wanted to do a two bedroom and bank and borrow for three years but they had that restriction in place, with only 100 points per year, we wouldn’t be able to get 2bedroom. Cost difference in maintenance fees from 100 to 150 for 46 years is quite a bit. So if we can avoid getting 150 I would rather. But I just keep second-guessing.

If in doubt, stick with what you have. Going from 100 resale to 159 direct is a lot more money-I wouldn’t spend it unless you were sure you “need it” vs “maybe”. You can always rent points from another member for an occasional trip.

We originally bought 100 BLT resale points at the beginning of 2020 with the plan that we’d be going every other year in a studio.
After finally going on our first trip as owners, we ended up adding 200 points purchased direct, since we’re now planning on also going yearly for a runDisney (long) weekend in a 1 bed.

Congrats on your purchase, I hope you enjoy your DVC membership! The answer to your question is "You can never have enough points" but see how the 100 points work for you and you'll know if you would be happier with more points. :earsboy:

We started out with 100 points. You can always add on later if you need more.

Once your resale closes, you become and Existing Member and you can purchase add-on contracts of 25+ points.* You won’t get the blue card until you reach whatever the current threshold is, but you can add-on easily.

*For some resorts, the minimum is 50 to add on. Also, some resale and direct points do not play well together, so just be aware of that.

What resorts have a minimum of 50 pts? Also when would it be a problem to have direct and resale pts at the same resort?
I just purchased a small contract (50 pts), thinking I could add on if we started going to WDW more than every few years. I would really like 75 points, and thought I would be able to add on 25 pts once it closed. TIA

Yes, you would typically at least break even when renting out points. Of course, it all depends on what you paid for your contract. If you take your total purchase cost and divide that by the total number of points in the life your contract you will come up with a price per point. For me, that comes to $5.25 per point. Combine that with the dues for 2022 and my total 2022 cost per point is right around $13/point. That is what I would have to rent the points for in 2022 to breakeven. But if you go onto any rental website you will see that you, as the owner, receive more than that. One site states that you will receive $15.50 as an owner if you book more than seven months out.

You will have to do the math on the contract you were looking at purchasing, but from what I understand just about every contract will at least break even if you rent the points out.

We bought 200 pts, enough for 6 or 7 nights in a 1 bedroom once per year. As a west coaster we thought to split time between Aulani and WDW. But now we are looking at inviting people to join us, and we might want 2 bedrooms if this trend continues... Addonitis..."This is the way"......
