Did something change with the TSA recently?

Do you need to bring a copy of your birth certificate to apply for Precheck? My husband and I both have no idea where those are.... and we travel in 3 weeks, not enough time??

I'm not sure what the turnaround time is, but if you go to the website and do the pre-registration, you can then go to one of the centers. They offer 'reservations', but those are likely already booked into June at this point. I've heard people being successful doing walk-ins. You just have to be prepared to wait because they will see the people with reservations first. You'll also likely have to contact the airline once you have your traveler number and have them apply it to the tickets to make sure it shows up.

You can do a birth certificate and a state ID/license.

Your passport will work. Three weeks is probably not enough time.

If you are only flying once a year it's probably not worth it to be bothered with the application fee and time that it takes to get to the interview place--which might not be even remotely near where you live.

Just pay the $85 per person (including the kids, I believe) and save yourself a kidney.
If it,were $85 per family but for a one time flying (we normally do only road trips) for 5 people not worth the $450 I guess we will just arrive earlier and wait in line and deal with it

FWIW on the lead time, I preregistered online last Saturday morning, had my appt. this morning at STL, and was told that I should have the number by Monday at the latest. The rep told me that officially they are told to tell people that the turnaround is 30 days, but she said that it almost never takes more than a week after your in-person visit, if you preregister online.

I do know that the website has changed since last Saturday. It now has a pop-up that warns you that appointments are becoming hard to come by.

And you know this how?

Because the ones who were holding things up said so while they were juggling their things, much to the annoyance of the rest of us.

"I never did this before"
"You'd think they'd let you know you'd need your ID Again"
"I though that we had to take everything out of our bags"
"I might pay for this if it goes this quickly"

I don't have a passport so I would need to find my birth certificate....

UmmmHmmm. Sure.

Even if, all of those except for one could be from people fresh into the program, or people, even with Pre-Check who don't fly much.

I'll say this, then shut up. Probably makes lots of people happy.

People here complain that "fools" slow down the lines. That "fools" don't know what to do. Etc.

Well, part of the problem is that the rules seem to change at a whim -- take off toupees, don't take them off. Take off false noses, don't take them off.

But, you know, none of us were born knowing how to go through security lines. Have a little bit of patience and kindness. It helps your blood pressure.

I know, lots of folks get surly about being behind "some slow old fool" in the supermarket checkout line. Well, you know, one of these days, that old fool will be you....Kismet.

I just spent 20 mins on hold to find out (also in MA with kids) and yeah, we're SOL unless we get a passport. My youngest will be 12 when we fly but next year she's stuck in the gap there unless I get her a passport which is $80 I really don't want to spend but probably will. I guess I'm off to the registry this summer to get the 14yr old an ID ($25).

I'm pretty sure the passport card is $100.. We'd have to pay the $60 expedited fee as well.. On top of the $15 + $25
Your $80 passport will cost another $60 + $25
.... I was willing to shell out $170... Not $270!!! When you going? Maybe we can hang out in the line!!

Probably too late for you, but is it possible to write your state representatives asking for legislation to lower the age of state IDs to 13?

It's not like lowering the drinking or smoking age. There's no reason why a 14 year old can get a state ID and not a 13 year old. And it allows the newly-turned teens access to pre-check. Something they don't have without an expensive passport (card), but their older and younger siblings do.

Edit to add: I just checked my home state, Kentucky. You have to be 15 for a state ID. Ouch! That's two years without pre-check.
I remember getting a state ID for my then 15-year old daughter to go on a cruise. But that was 12 years ago.

Most states I've checked had no age requirement. A few were 12 or younger. Massachusetts, New Jersey (both 14) Kentucky, and DC (both 15) were the only states I've seen over 13.

Edit once again to add: Kentucky has these IDs for those under 16.

There are used for missing children. Wonder if you can use them for pre-check. Does Massachusetts have them?

Hmm well no, the rules don't change that much. I go through security 2-4 times per week and your liquids still have to be in the bag and your shoes and jackets off.

It's the people who don't empty their pockets despite being told to, who don't carry their ID out even when there's a sign every three feet saying you need your ID and boarding pass, who insist vehemently that hairspray "isn't a liquid, it's a spray" instead of throwing it out and moving forward, and yes, people with kids and strollers who slow the whole thing down.

Those rules don't change. I have been told once in the past four months to leave my jacket on.

I think the confusion comes from the "I'll just do what the person in front of me does" instead of listening to instructions. That person might not remove their laptop because they have a checkpoint bag, or might not take off a belt because they purposefully didn't put it on so as to not have to take it off.

It isn't that complicated but people perpetually act surprised at the process.

There was someone on my last flight who had precheck but didn't even know what a boarding pass is. She couldn't figure out how to use the kiosk to print one, then ran into her again in the precheck Lane where I guess she was lucky not to have to do the shoes/jacket/liquids thing because she didn't know about any of it. Then she couldn't figure out how to board the plane.

Heck, I was behind someone last week in a suit with a Platinum Medallion luggage tag who meticulously removed one item at a time, carefully removed and retied his shoes before placing them on the belt, then went through the scanner with a bunch of papers in his pockets.

Passport card for minors (under 16) is $40, adults $55

I am hearing about all of these flight delays and long TSA security lines. We just flew in April and the lines were long, but not unbearable. We flew from Bradley to MCO.

What am I missing? Did they just change something and now the lines are much worse? Makes me nervous to book flights again for next April.

I think it's based on a couple of things, the TSA recently admitted the wait times were getting worse and blamed passengers and there was a youtube video that was quite popular showing the very long line at O'Hare.

This Gizmodo post has some good links and explains it a bit

I've had not one single bad experience with a TSA person...not one. I've had some long lines...but those were usually due to travelers not knowing what the procedures are. Here's a thought....find out what to expect before you get to the airport! It's not rocket science.
Personally, I'm tired of the 'people don't travel all the time, so don't know what to do' argument. Figure it out. Are the rules stopping terrorist attacks? Maybe, maybe not. But...the rules exist. As long as they do, they need to be adhered to. Luke it or not. The person in line, who thinks the rules are a joke, and behaves accordingly, slows things down for everyone behind them.

Oh, and for all you people rushing out to buy Precheck? Realize that you could still have to go through security the same as everyone else! It's not a guarantee!! I've been in airports that don't accept it, as well as in airports that do but have still been pulled aside for 'addtl attention'. It happens.
Pack your carry on bag correctly....otherwise, you'll stand there, while your bag is searched.

There are a few things going on....
Airlines are selling the pre check per flight. most gates now have 2 lines one for those who paid and for those who did not. my experience seems to be about 40% of people paid. If you pay ask as there are separate lines although at the ID check but only still 1 TSA agent checking both lines as they merge... there is actually 3 lines now Not paid, airline paid and know...But as below all the paid usually have a separate scanner line.
TSA agents are checking things better (for lack of better words) one time my laptop bag (and there was nothing but metal in it that I can not walk through with) was run through twice instead of someone looking in it?? --did this to several people
People are bringing a LOT of carry on bags Back to above (airline fees)
can not say people who did not follow rules slowed things down as there was always agents telling people to double check OVER and OVER.....but I am sure there are still issues especially with vacationers who do not fly much--yes this is understandable BUT the rules are stated and told to people..
lastly there are a lot of people who do arrive 3 hours early making the lines that much longer for flights leaving in an hour. (this is not wrong but does contribute to the longer lines)
I can say at Newark airport what use to take me 10 minutes at best takes me 45-1 hour now. These are early morning mostly business travelers. when I came back to Newark the gate was walk through... no waits. Boston Logan was faster then usual...and the line was longer than other times.
will paying help.... maybe but do not expect to walk through you will still have a wait likely longer than your previous experiences.
I personally did not notice less TSA agents but at airports like Orlando where there is ONLY one line... one lane closed will slow things down a lot.
