Just saw on the news that a family is sueing seaworld becuse theire son wittnesed the death of one of the trainers. Just wondering how ever one else is feeling about that.

My feeling is that they should throw this family into the water with that same orca so they can discuss their displeasure directly with the whale.

I think it's horrible.

I mean, yes, that trainer losing her life was horrific..... but it wasn't done intentionally.

Trying to make money off of it is ridiculous.

I haven't heard the specifics...

If the boy has been traumatized and has required medical/psychiatric care... AND, if SeaWorld has not pro-actively made the decision to negotiate with the family about reasonable compensation... Maybe I could understand.

If the family is looking for a multi-million dollar judgement... WELL, ummm, Good Luck With That!

Anyone can sue for anything. I hope it gets thrown out of court as a frivolous lawsuit.

I see at as one more example of how lawsuit-happy our society has become.

I don't think SeaWorld should have to pay anything, this family is trying to make a quick buck off a terrible tragedy.

I agree with this. If the child is truly traumatized and the family is just seeking medical reimbursement, I'm 100% okay with that.

My feeling is that there is always someone willing to exploit a situation to gain either money or fame.

On the up side, I am a firm believer in KARMA! And it will bite them in the .... :rolleyes1

thats ridiculous. thats like a family suing because their son witnessed a car accident in which someone died. no one couldve predicted what happened.

Actually Seaworld could have predicted it. This particular animal has had issues in the past. I hate to see how easily people sue these days, but I do know children that would have been pretty traumatized at having seen this.

Yeah, there is more to this than Seaworld would like us to know. I saw an interview on the Today Show with the former Safety Director of Seaworld and she cited a lot of different issues they had in the past with that whale. According to her, Seaworld fired her because she knew too much. She was brand new at the job, only a week in when the death occured. Seaworld said she was fired for poor performance and was trying to extort them to keep quiet. She says they tried to pay her hush money and she was never written up or verbally warned for poor performance prior to her termination. Who knows the truth, but either way it raises suspicion.

As far as the lawsuit, we have all heard of crazier lawsuits where money is awarded. I'm not surprised at all. :sad2:

youre right. i chose my words poorly. what i was trying to say is that this is obviously a wild animal and even the most tame animals out there can lash out at any second. thats why wild animals should never be kept in captivity... but thats a whole different story. while, yes, you dont go to seaworld to see someone get killed, its not completely out of the question. when you have people dealing with animals a hundred times their size, thats a very real risk you take and as parents, i would think they should take responsibility for taking their child into that type of environment.

This.

Anyone would be "traumatized" by this but come on-- you don't sue the drivers of a tragic, traumatizing car accident you drove by...

I think it depends on the family. Had my 5 or 6 yo seen this, would they be having nightmares, or be in therapy, maybe. If it was a 16yo, prob not.

If the family has really had their kid in counseling related to seeing such a horrific thing (and I am sure it was horrific, to see sweet 'Shamu' kill someone) and if SeaWorld is not doing anything to help with this (paying for counseling or making a plan to pay) then yes, I think it is not someone being sue happy, but taking care of their childs needs.

Now if they don't have anything to back up the claim their child was 'damaged' by seeing it..........then they should get nothing.....why should SeaWorld help your child when you won't!
