Did my dog have a seizure?

Last night Comet was walking through the kitchen then all of a sudden he couldn't move his front legs and his body tensed up. He barely regained control of his front legs then couldn't move his back legs. (He looked paralyzed.) I took him outside immediately to try to get him to walk (he loves being outside). He lost control of his bladder mulitple times and his body stayed in the contraced/tense state for a few minutes while he tried to walk around on barely functioning legs. After a few minutes (which seemed like forever), he was almost back to normal with his back legs still being kinda weird.

I called the emergency vet and she said it sounded like a seizure to her and I could bring him in if I wanted or I could wait to make an appointment today with his regular vet. I decided to wait until today to make an appointment since he didn't have another one.

Does his symptoms sound like a seizure to you pet experts or does it sound like something else?

From what I've heard, dogs can react differently in a seizure. When I had a dog who was prone to seizures, he would tense up like you describe, but he would slide himself around on the floor in the middle of it.

After I took him to the vet, he was put on a pretty inexpensive medication that controlled the seizures well! He lived a good, long life, too.

Sounds like one to me. Toby had one a year or so ago - he had a bad cold with a fever and we were laying on the couch and he had a seizure. Scared the bejezzus out of me because DFi was at work and I was home alone. But, I just left him to it (he was on the couch) and he's been fine ever since. If it was a recurring thing, I'd be taking him in to the vet, but I've read that sometimes seizures can occur because of fevers.

My dog had them all the time. It started when he got overheated. I would just hold him and tell him it was going to be okay. Not a lot we could do and the vet never gave him meds. He was like that for 6 years and fine before and after the seizure.

Yes, it does sound like a seizure. How old is your dog and what breed is it? Epiliepsy in some dogs comes on I believe around 3-4 yrs old but as others have said, can often be well controlled with inexpensive medicine. There are other things that can cause seizures, though, so glad you're headed to the vet. Good luck, and let us know.

It sounds like it, I had an epileptic Gold Retriever. Luckily he only had them every couple of months or so. My vet didn't feel the need to medicate him unless it started happening more frequently.

We had a dog who had the exact thing happen. The vet told me when it happened to take him into a dark place, or if I couldn't do that to try to shield his eyes from light. They told me that there was nothing that could be done unless he began having them frequently--which he never did thankfully--but they can give them medication for seizures if needed. It's quite scary the first few times that you see this happen and very worrisome too. I wish you much luck!
