Hubby and I celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary this past Wednesday.
Over dinner, I brought up the topic of what we'd do to celebrate our 10th next year. It's a milestone anniversary, and we went to WDW on our honeymoon, and our children will be (next year) 8 & 4 1/2, and being a DisneyBug, of course I want to go back to WDW!! Thought we'd go for 10 days, stay at a nicer hotel, hit SeaWorld, check out Aquatica, maybe fit in Universal & IOA... and my 4 year old will be big enough to ride more of the rides with us then too.
His reaction? ....."there are other places to go you know"....
MY HEART SANK!! I almost couldn't breathe. "Other places"?? Is he crazy??!! Then he told me Disney to him is a "been there done that" thing.
So I asked him what he would suggest for a vacation with kids at our kid's ages. He mentioned camping (which I love and the kids would too -- but not for 10 days...) then he tossed out a cruise (but I'm sure after his anti-disney comment that he'd snicker at me suggesting the DCL...)
ADVICE -- PLEASE!!!!! I'm loosing sleep over this one. I'm big on "family vacations" -- and while the kids are small, I think Disney offers it all and thensome.... Please talk me off the ledge!! Thanks!

Honestly...

1) You did make a lot of assumptions in putting the 10th anniversary trip info in your signature without ever consulting your husband. I think you should start by confessing that you had your heart set on Disney & you shouldn't have built it all up in your mind without having that discussion, but you're ready to hear his concerns & ideas & come up with something that works for everyone. I would recommend not to go into the conversation with the goal, "I will talk him into Disney World." He will probably sense that you are not open to alternatives and resist. But, ask him to listen to why you want to go there and what you think the advantages are.

2) What's important is having a great time together as a family, not who spends more days at DisneyWorld in their lifetime. If people in the family are not keen on a particular destination, then it makes sense to consider other possibilities.

3) Why not suggest the Disney cruise idea? To me his comment sounded like he didn't want to return to Disney World, not that he was fed up with all things Disney. This could be a perfect way for everyone to get what he or she wants. In bringing up the idea of the cruise, be sure to mention the adults-only options like the spa and Palo.

Nothing was assumed. It was brought up -- although more casually and off-the-cuff --several times before -- but then, he was ok with the idea, which was why I was so shocked by his comment.​

He's not the spa type -- more the ESPN lounge type. Still - it offers something for everyone -- so worth talking about!​

I would print out everything you can find (that obviously, he would enjoy) about the Disney Cruise! Really play it up for him...like it was ALL his GREAT IDEA!!!!!

The Travel Channel recently had a great show about DCL including how awesome it is for adults, if you have DVR or TiVo maybe you can try to catch another showing of it ** ETA to see the upcoming showings listings click here

Does DCL offer free vacation planning videos etc. as WDW does? Perhaps order one to use as a visual aid in your presentation LOL.

I would definitely suggest the DCL as well. My Dh and I did it a few years back before kids and absolutely loved it. We had such a great time and it was by far the best cruise I had ever been on. There are so many other things to do on a cruise besides getting massages, but they are great too.

I thought one of the ships had an ESPN club on it, unless they changed it.

As for the kids, they have so many things for them to do. They have their own club, you get your beeper and you get beeped when the kids want you to come and get them...if you are looking for that alone time here and there with DH.

The food is fantastic, the entertainment is top notch...and great as well. So much to do. If you do take the cruise, I think you would have a fabulous time. Hey, you can also suggest the 7 day cruise and still do 3 days at Disney

I think you have a good shot at the Disney Cruise Line!
I am having similar issues with my DH!

While it may be true that I might have jumped the gun to already be planning our next vacation (considering that we leave for WDW in 2 days!) I don't think my DH should have flat out refused the idea for another trip to Disney next year!
He says that this trip will be more running around and he wants more relaxing time. Ok - understood.
He wants to go to the Grand Cayman Islands. While most of you might think 'ohh, how nice and relaxing' ...WRONG! He only wants to go to the GCI because there is a skateboarding park on the island! (yes a 41 year old skateboarder!)
A friend of ours went on a cruise that stoped there and now that is all he can think about. I mentioned the DCL and his first reaction was 'No Disney'!
I have s l o w l y been introducing bits of DCL info without him even realizing it.
Now I also have mentioned that the DCL stops in the GCI and that he could spend as much time as is allowed at the skate park - and he isn't so opposed.
I can't mention anything else until we get back from this trip or his head will exoload!

We all have our ways of dealing with our husbands to get the things we want and if you handle yours the right way I'm sure you can get him to agree to the DCL! Good Luck!

There are planning DVD's for the DCL just like there are for WDW. You take a tour of the ship and you can pick the type of trip you're interested in and you get the info that most pertains to you. Adults, young kids, older kids, etc. My DH likes WDW, it's growing on him, but he has said he would like a cruise too since it's more relaxing. But we took it easy last trip and he really enjoyed it. As long as I go with the flow and don't overplan he would be OK with going back. Definately play up the things he would enjoy. The kids clubs to keep the iddos occupied so you two can swim, have dinner, spent some "quality time" together.... Or maybe you can try to come up with some places that you could both agree on that's nuetral. The Grand Canyon, San Fransico, a trip to the wine country, Paris......just be willing to compromise. Or maybe try to take a shorter trip to WDW, and let Grandma or someone watch the kids and take an adults only group for 4 or 5 days and you two head off to a romantic getaway.

Our 9th Anniversary was the 19th too...at dinner (first time alone at dinner in a LONG time) I happened to mention what to do the next year. I also suggested WDW as we went there on our honeymoon too!! DH said the SAME thing yours did..."There are other places to go"!!

He started off by mentioning camping or renting an RV. Not really what I call "romantic" for 10 years! He did mention wanting to go to Italy or London as a family ...ugh, NO...our dd is 2! No way, not until she old enough to appriciate it!! So then he also brings up a cruise. I asked DCL? Then I got an eye-roll from him... not a no...just an eye-roll...so I'm thinking I still have a chance on that.

Some people can get over dis'ed Not to worry. A cruise is a great idea with the kids for your anniversary. DH & I took the Dis cruise with my then 4 & 6 year olds a few years back. It was nice, however, the following year we decided to save money, and did a royal carribean cruise(RCCL). It had more to offer for everybody (DH) and the kids clubs were more inviting. We found DCL to be too many children and too child oriented. No casino, bars closed early and no comedians, newlywed game or belly flop contsts. We didn't need the kids club on disney cruise line because everything closed down by9:00 or 10:00pm. Our kids did better in the RCCL clubs where there was breathing space. We went out and had fun in the evenings. The year after that, we took them on a Princess cruise. This was our favorite so far. This year it's back to disneyworld with a three day RCCL cruise as a trailer.

Another vote for DCL! We went on our first cruise ever also, it being the DCL really setthe bar high! But we all LOVED IT!!!! We will do another ina few years!! DH and I are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary next week (9/27). We are having a childless getaway (long weekend) to the Florida Keys in November and will take a family trip to WDW in April. I feel that 4 or 5days is plenty for us to be away yet celebrate our milestone and still save enough $$ to afford a great family vacaton as well.

If you have to do Disney and want to include the fam, I strongly suggest the Disney Cruise Line - its the best of both world - family , Disney and the beautiful carribbean.... you won't be disappointed!!!

We are about to go on our second cruise and my husband had a great time. On our first cruise he went to the sports lounge by himself and had a beer. I like DCL for its service and kid friendly atmosphere. There is something for everyone, times for family, just as a couple, and solo time. If you check out the DCL thread there are many trip reports of just couples going and having the time of their lives. We are also about to celebrate our 8 year wedding anniversary at the end of October. Both cruises have been at anniversay time and it seems to work for us and my husband is all guy (firefighter, plays softball). I have been considering having our vows renewed Disney style for our 10 year, but that is because we did not have a big wedding at all and every woman wants that dream wedding. Good luck!!!

How about a little shorter more budget minded trip to Disney with the family and 3-4 day get away for the 2 of you. Vegas or a short cruise might be nice. My husband calls our family vacations "trips" and when we get away alone thats a "vacation".

I'm making my list of things to keep "mentioning" to him ...better kid activites, bigger staterooms, cleaner ship, bigger staterooms, better food and the bigger staterooms! All he's thinking about is driving 4 hours to the coast rather then flying into Orlando. I figure I've got a good 3-4 months to work on him!

For what its worth, I live about 45 minutes from Galveston and I would not consider leaving from the Gulf Coast. Florida has much nicer beaches. We arrive a day early and visit Florida before we leave so we can get into vacation mode before the cruise . I have never been on any other cruise besides DCL, I am too scared to try something else. Good luck I hope the DVD wins him over.

We came to a compromise by agreeing to meet in the middle... she wants a cruise, I want Disney, we go on a Disney Cruise. She wants to explore other states, and countries, I want to go to Disney... solution? Adventures by Disney.

While I think he should have some say so on your tenth anniversary - so should you. Exploring the other options provided by Disney - offers a great solution.

I would LOVE to do one of the Adventures by Disney trips but the problem is that DD is only 2. The youngest age for most of the trips is 6. We'll have to wait. Hopefully they'll still be around in 4 more years!!!
