Did I make a mistake?

I don't know anything about the people who cut hair at Disney. they are probably wonderful and amazing. But I'm not sure I would take my curly haired babies to a barber on Main Street WDW for her first haircut. I guess it truly depends on how curly it is. I have a slight curl to my hair and don't trust many people with it!
Good Luck! I hope it all works out and you have a great day!

My vote would be bippity boppity boutique. I wish they had it when my DD was little. She did it when she was 13 and loved every minute. Maybe you could get her hair trimmed before you go?? That might be a good compromise.

I would still get the first haircut there. DS had his first haircut at Disney but he was much younger. DD got her haircut at the same time and loved it. She has curly hair and we were happy with the cut. She loved the pixie dust.

If you do an afternoon appointment just be aware of the parade. You will not be able to cross the street while the parade is going.

It sounds magical to me, and four is different than a toddler. She will always remember getting first haircut in Disney,I do agree that I'd schedule it earlier in day just to be safe. As for crisscrossing the park, I'd just walk to train and ride to the front! We love saving our feet by taking the train.

I wish I would have known about the tram! She would have loved to take a special ride on that instead of walking. We were able to grab an 8:30 am reservation at Crystal Palace so my son and parents can split off and go towards space mountain or towards Jungle Cruise instead.

I want to! She has the most adorable spiral curls but they tend to get tangled up. My husband has been wanting to get her haircut for 2 years...holding him off until now has been a task and when I ask him if it's worth it he goes "YEAH! She'll be four and a half! The only reason why we waited was cause you always said we'd get it done in Disney!"

I have stick straight hair and a curly haired daughter. Nearly everything I was doing was making her hair worse. Apparently, using a regular towel breaks and damages the hair. My shampoo choice was horrible and I used a brush (gasp) when that just makes it frizzier and destroys the curls. I found a lovely hairstylist who explained to me how to deal with curly hair and now my daughter has long hair that doesn’t tangle. Because of that experience, I would suggest if her hair is really tangled, look at all of those other elements. As a general rule, If it works for straight hair, you probably shouldn’t do it with curly.

It used to be really bad when she was using baby shampoo around 3 years old. It's gotten better since I switched her to my shampoo and conditioner so it only gets really bad when she sleeps with wet hair or I don't brush it in a few days (I tried combs and they got stuck in her hair but it may be better now that I've switched her to shampoo/conditioner.) Is there a shampoo/conditioner you could recommend?

I use carol’s daughter or deva curl. The big issue is to avoid sulfates with curly hair - a lot of stores have an “ethnic” hair section where they keep the curly hair stuff.

When we do the conditioning step, we detangle her hair using just our hands. If we get stuck, we add more conditioner. Once it is clean and detangled, the goal is to reform the hair into curls. We dry her hair with squishing motions using an old t-shirt. If it gets tangled, we spray it with water and detangle, but then focus on making the curls intact again.

Oh- curly hair doesn’t like daily shampoo- twice a week is max. You still can bathe daily but skip the shampoo- go straight to conditioner.

Brushes and combs break up curls and the goal is to have intact curls. With your fingers, you kinda recurl the hair as you go. (Hard to explain in words- the hairstylist showed us and it made more sense).

What is really fun- explaining to my straight haired daughter why her sister doesn’t have to brush her hair but she does. It was hard for me to be like it is ok to not brush and trust it will look good at the end but her hair is much healthier looking now, much less ratty and frizzy so I go with it.

My mom posted this on the refrigerator when I was getting up at 6AM to straighten my hair before school everyday....

From a Dear Abby Column...

I have it memorized...

"To a Daughter With Curly Hair"

Child of my heart,
what did I do
to place this ugly curse on you?

What genes of mine
bestowed this pox
to burden you with curly locks?

A thousand humble pardons dear
that teenage styles are straight this year

So eat your bread crusts love and pray,
your hair will grow in straight some day.

Anyway, the point is curly hair is really a gift and everyone who has it..kind of hates it and very few hair stylists, barbers whatever...can cut it properly. Maybe do a trim and some pixie dust?

I have a hard time with the idea of spending precious morning Time on the very first day at Disney in the barber shop. Is there any other time you can do that?

There are so many magical moments for a 4 year old that you only get to have once..just not sure the haircut would be above enjoying time on some attractions or meeting princesses...

Curly haired 39 year old here! Curly hair is a different beast entirely than straight hair and a bad haircut isn't just bad for 3 months until regrowth happens enough to fix mistakes. Too much off of my curls plus humidity and I've got bad hair days for almost a year. (And my hair grows fast!) Most stylists will somehow get curly haired mops into a triangle shape which is not what you want at all!

If it were me, which it is not! You do you, I would still do the cut, but a trim only. No major length taken off or shaping. Then it's still special and a wonderful memory.

I have learned to manage my curls and have tried the methods outlined above. Quite frankly, I dont have time for all the squishing/plopping etc. advice that you find on curly girl sites. Also my go to products are Dove intense moisture shampoo/conditioner. I can go sulfate free but when I go silicone, everything else free my hair gets rough and terrible feeling.

Shampoo every 3rd day and condition daily. Comb with a wide tooth comb and apply gel then finger curl (wrap sections of hair around my finger and release) which gives curls a shape/direction to follow. Then no touching!

Easiest curly hair routine and have learned to love my curls with this method. I can't imagine doing all the steps on a little kid when I can't even sit still long enough to do them on my own hair!

I hope your daughter has a special memory for her first hair cut :flower1:

(Sorry got off topic with the curly hair advice but it really is a foreign language for noncurly haired folks!)

Curly hair here and DD has some curl. I wouldn't do anything at a barber shop at Disney. DD's first haircut she was 5 and it was at my salon.

Also try Miss Jessie's creams for curls. There are a few out there. Works great!

I am told the triangle cut comes when they straighten your hair to cut it. They do a nice neat line then your curl springs up and now you have this funny triangle cut. But most stylist straighten your hair when cutting it so it is super common.

Compared to my straight haired daughter, the curly regime is a lot of work but compared to what I was doing when I tried to brush it, this is a million times easier (and less tears) so it is kinda a matter of perception. I have a boss and coworker with curly hair and we all go to the same stylist. The routine for their hair is way longer than for my daughter- there were modifications to work with antsy child made from the ideal routine. I don’t think I could do everything they do with a little one.
