Did I eat turtle?

I have no idea why I suddenly thought of this--I think it was those news stories of that North Korean wacka-doo being upset that a terrapin farm did not produce any lobsters--on our cruise in April I ordered a dish at Palo that I thought was fist that started with a "t." I did not recognize the name of the fish when I ordered it, but my husband ordered the tuna, so I wanted to get something different. OMG, was it terrapin, i.e. turtle?! Does anyone have an idea of what I ordered? o_O

No idea, but if it was good, why worry about it? :D

What's the difference between turtle or tuna or chicken anyway? Just another type of animal protein. It's all in what you are used to.

So you're fine eating Fido?

I mean, I've been vegetarian since 1990 so from my outside perspective I don't see why omnivores quibble about it, but they do. Most people do have their limits.

Op I cannot imagine that dcl serves turtle.

Oooh, maybe it was Tumbot, because that IS a fish I have never heard of. (I guess if I am going to eat turtle it's best to NOT know I am eating turtle!)

There is a difference between domesticated animals and wild animals in my opinion. I respect vegetarianism, as it has many health benefits according to what I have read and also think other people should respect one another's personal preferences and not make people feel guilty by implying that they are "eating Fido" if they eat meat.

I wouldn't go out of my way to ask for dog if that's what you are asking, but if I was in a country that it was served as a normal dish, and I was offered food by the locals, I would graciously accept it. That said, I might not ask what I was being served. ;)

As long as it looks, smells, and tastes good, I'm not going to be overly concerned about it. :)

It was definitely turbot. I ordered it myself at Palo on our cruise in April.

Turbot is a flatfish. Much like a flounder. It can be wild caught or farmed. I'm willing to bet the Disney version is farmed.

When I was a kid we ate turtle every year when we went to Baja. I don't know if they still eat it there, but it was quite good. Tastes like chicken.:)

Turtle soup is a common New Orleans dish.

Not vegetarian but generally I agree that ethically, meat is meat.

I'm originally from New Orleans, and was just going to post that.

I've seen turtle soup on New Orleans menus my whole life (59 years) - it is nothing new. The finest restaurants have always served it.

It is also a very common local dish in the Cayman Islands (yes, same place as the famous turtle farm).

I think turtle meat should have a similar taste to alligator meat. They are from the same animal family I guess.
I hate to admit this, but my parents once tried to trick me and my siblings into trying fido meat. I was older, so I figured out and refused to try any, but my little brothers tasted it. It tasted like beef stew. NO WAY I am eating my furry friends!!! We were about 4-8 years old in range. :worried:

I've had turtle soup a couple of times. I didn't care much for it, and that's unusual because I'm the very definition of omnivore. I can probably count on one hand the number of things I've had that I just plain didn't care for.
