I find that people who get up in arms about this sort of thing are generally worried that the perceived exclusivity they receive from having the item/experience in question will somehow be tarnished if too many others are allowed to enjoy the same privileges.
THIS
From reading DIS for the last while, in my opinion, this is spot on. Its like people think, this is our club, and we dont want more people joining cos then it makes it less special.
Having worked in the hospitality industry and now in marketing, its very obvious that so many people have no understanding of why companies do certain things example, like the OP stated allowing someone to use their work address which is inside the boundary for a Sol Cal pass. To Disney this makes sense, it is about money and good business strategy to them. Companies want people to sign up to loyalty programs, as the information gathered , not just at sign up but whenever the person uses their loyalty card play an important part in the marketing and eventually financial strategy of the company.
Everytime you use a company loyalty card you are being tracked and the information is fed into huge data bases. For Disney, in this example, if they see an increase in Sol Cal AP signups just around the border, they could in the future extend their boder to capture this target market. More Sol Cal AP signups, mean more more locals visiting the park which in turn secures financial turnover in tourist off season, whic in turn brings more money to the park, which in turn leads to ride and attraction up dates etc etc.
Bottom line is always about money and generating income from customer loyalty cards. So for all those who think you are somehow "special" cos you LIVE within the Sol Cal boundary, you are in fact being used by Disney for market research every time you swipe your AP!
