I'm watching Oprah right now - they are talking about the slaughter of dolphins in Japan and it is just awful! I could just cry.:sad2:

Did you see The Cove?
Are the filmakers the ones on Oprah ?

Have you seen the documentry "The Cove"? I'm not watching Oprah, but I assume that she's talking about the same thing that movie did.

It's a practice that has been going on for centuries. That's why there is tuna labled, "dolphin safe" tuna. So people can consciously buy tuna where dolphins weren't killed in harvesting the tuna. :thumbsup2

I DVR Oprah every day. I might just have to delete that one. Too sad for me to watch. I cry easily

Yes, it was the makers of the film "The Cove". I didn't realize that the dolphin trainer from the show "Flipper" is now a dolphin activist. I guess he joined the cause after Flipper died. :sad1:

I'm not a fan of americans dictating whats right and wrong with other cultures like the dolphin hunt and the seal hunt. Why don't you take a closer look at what your own food goes through? American slaughter houses aren't any nicer than what happens to those dolphins.

I agree with you on the fact that slaughter houses here are horrid, but there are documentries out there that point out the awful conditions in those slaughter houses. Brutal murder of harmless animals, regardless of the culture, is still horrible.

From the brief information shown in the clip and interview of the Cove producers, it is my understanding that the mercury levels in the dolphins is also unsafe and they are feeding it to children. So not only is it barbaric the way they are roping the dolphins in and killing them, it is also not safe to eat the meat. How they can call that a dolphin "hunt" I do not know - they cannot even swim away.

My DH is a serious hunter, but even he thinks this is wrong. From what I've heard in interviews, the meat from these dolphins was mislabeled as whale meat and was given to the local schools to be fed to the schoolchildren even though the mercury levels were through the roof (and over there the children were expected to clear their plates). Also, the primary reason for catching the dolphins was because of the high price a young one would bring if sold to a Seaworld type show. Although it's no longer done in this specific cove due to public pressure, it still goes on in other places just more illicitly. If they were killing them to eat them and the meat wasn't dangerous, I feel it would be a different situation, but the meat being so toxic makes this reprehensible.
Just MHO!

Was the former trainer Ric O'Barry? If so, that guy is a real psycho.

Sad, yes but there are other things that bother me a whole lot more.

Like what for instance? :confused3

I'm sure I could come up with a whole list of things that would bother me more, but I do love dolphins and whales and it pulled at my heart strings, that's all.:lovestruc

I couldn't watch it. They showed a little clip and once I saw the blood I changed the channel.

I can't watch The Cove. I know it would make me cry, just knowing that it happens makes me cry. Here I am saving dolphins that can be saved, and they are over there killing them. As a pp said, Ric O Barry is a psycho. Don't believe anything he says! He wasn't even a real dolphin trainer. He was a underwater photographer that helped with the dolphins. In those days, there was no such thing as a dolphin trainer. Flipper died probably because he was sick. He DID NOT commit suicide. He was probably having trouble staying afloat because of sickness and drowned. This happens in the wild! Time for me to get off the soapbox but I HATE Ric O Barry!

The way he told the story though- that the dolphin swam up to him and stopped breathing.
Well that pulled at my heart. I don't know if he made that up. But it was so very sad to watch.
We've been on Dolphin watches in South Carolina and had the beautiful experience of a baby dolphin following the boat. We learned that if you see their eye coming out of the water- they are checking you out. And our little guy sure was. It was a very special morning. And then off he went with mom.
