Diaper rash help

My DS2.5 has a really bad rash. In one spot it looks like it is about to bleed. I have used everything I can think of from A&D to Butt Paste and everything inbetween. I am also trying to leave off his diaper but he asks for it back on when he has to go. I can't get him to sit on his potty. He does use it about 50% of the time on a normal day. We just intorduced it. I left a message for the nurses but that can take hours to get a call back. SO I figured I would come to the next best place for answers. Any ideas of what else I can use? I did stop using wipes to clean him up.

Good old fashioned Vasoline is the main product found in the stuff used for bad irritation from things like colostomy bags - the hospital had it for DS when he was in NICU and had the worst rash I've ever seen from the antiobiotics and mineral supplements.

No wipes, just hop into a tub after a wet or dirty diaper and let him play for a bit.

Poor little guy - no fun to have a rash like that!

Desitin creamy. It goes on easy and keeps a great barrier between bum and diaper.

After the rash is gone, I would recommend putting on a thin layer of Vaseline on with every diaper change.

My grandmother told me this advice when my 1st son was born, and I only had 1 minor diaper rash ever between both of my children. It really works and keeps their skin super soft!

I don't have any quick advice for you but sometimes when it gets this bad, it is a yeast infection. Usually they can prescribe a topical yeast cream and that will clear it right up.

my little guy (now 8 1/2) went through this and it ended up being a yeast based rash that we had to use an antibiotic cream on. the pediatrician did have us (when the yeast was not present) use desitin and instructed us to "ice his butt"-no not ice as in cubes, ice as in cake frosting! she said to put it on thick like you were frosting a cupcake so that it wouldnt immediatly wipe off as soon as he sat down. eventualy she had us get a type of heating lamp that he had to lie under several times a day in order to dry the surface out. he ended up quite the nudist (for that matter still is ) cuz the ped. said all the uncovered time he could get would speed up the healing (and as a result we ended up with lots of desitin on the furniture ).

There might be a possibility that it is a yeast infection, especially if it is very sore and not responding to treatment.

I've always used Mary Kay's extra emollient night creme. It has always cleared up my kids' diaper rashes in a matter of hours.

Poor kiddo....those rashes are miserable.

Has he recently been on antibiotics? My DS got the worst rash that nothing would take care of when he had been on antibiotics. It ended up being a yeast infection and our doctor was able to call him some prescription cream that cleared him up. You might call his doctor and see if they think it might be yeast and get him a prescription.

For everyday type rashes I use the Desitin creamy and have had good luck with it.

Hope you find something that works. DS would just cry and tell me his butt hurt when he had that yeast infection. I felt so bad because he was obviously in quite a bit of pain.

my son used to get those too, a bath then Aveeno diaper rash lotion worked like a charm. Just make sure his butt is dried before you put any rash lotion on it so you don't seal in the moisture.

Then this would make him MUCH more susceptible to a yeast infection in the diaper area.

If you have any anti-yeast stuff laying around you can mix that into vasoline or any other rash cream - if it is better at the next change then you know what you have going on!

Definitely call the doctor and get their opinion. They are so used to hearing this they usually just call something in. DS was doing much better within a day of using the prescription.

When my kids got this their pediatrician told me to alternate Lotrium af (a cream used for athletes foot) and cortisone with each diaper change until it cleared up. I usually only had to do this for 2 days tops.

The nurse just called back and she is going to talk to a doc for a perscription and she would call me back. I was most surprised with the fact she told me there is a $5 fee for perscription call ins without an appointment. Thank you everyone for your great advice!

Your ped charged you $5 call a call in? Is this common is your area?

You are right to stop using wipes until skin is cleared. When this happened with my children I would wash their butts off in warm tub water using just my hand and a small amount of ivory or dove soap (make sure you clean your hands well afterward), then pat excess water with clean towel and let air dry. Seeing as rashes like this were usually yeast/fungal, my team recommended over the counter miconazole cream (in the feminine products section) which I would use in small amounts, followed by cream of choice and a clean diaper. Check with your pediatrician's first, but the miconazole might be what you need, especially after a month of antibiotics, which throws off the balance of normal skin flora. Good luck!

I moved into this area about 1 1/2 ago. I have never heard of such a thing. THey did just call back and I have to take him in. They first offered me 12:10. I am a half hour away. So I guess I will update this evening and maybe start calling other peds in the area.

Our doctors are doing this too. They do this so much, I guess it's costing them a lot of time.
