I'm expecting our first in December and I'm trying to get prepared. I want to have a few boxes of diapers on hand but I'm not sure what sizes. I only got a small pack (44 ct I think) of the newborn because I have a feeling he will be a big baby and I don't want to have too many. I also got a box of 144 ct. of size 1 and will probably get another big box. So, my question is, how long were your children in each size... if you recall.

Thanks!!!

ETA: How many diapers does a baby normally go through each day :scratchin

Newborns (especially breast fed newborns) can go through 8-10 diapers per day. That will gradually decrease to about 6 per day as your child gets older (just my experience, so YMMV). You are smart not to load up on the newborn size. They are good since they have the cutout for the umbilical cord, but size 1 diapers start at 8 pounds or so and you can fold the front down if the cord stump has not come off yet. If you are having a baby shower, you might get several packs of size 1 diapers.

Unless you find a particularly wonderful deal, I wouldn't spend the money or waste the space on storing larger sizes. Size 2 diapers start at around 12 pounds (I think - it's been a few years since I bought diapers), but size 1 diapers go past that weight so there is some overlap (I think size 1 are 8-14 pounds, size 2 are 12-18, and size 3 are 16-28 or something like that). I had more of a tendency to end up with extra diapers of the smaller size since I put my DD's into the next size up as soon as they got to the weight (larger size diapers are more absorbent). Babies usually double their birthweight in about five months, so you will probably be out of size 1 diapers by then.

Different diaper brands also fit differently. Neither of my girls could wear Huggies since they are long-waisted - the diapers gapped at the legs and would leak. They both did better with Pampers. (But I swore by the Huggies overnights as soon as they could wear them - DD4 (when she was about 18 months old) once slept 16 hours and her Huggies overnight didn't leak!). You may stock up on diapers just to find that the brand you chose wouldn't be your first choice if you got to choose again.

Congratulations!

First of all, I can't believe you are almost due already- I remember when you announced you were pregnant! Congrats!

Both my son and daughter leaked through everything but Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers. They are the more expensive Pampers, but they saved us laundry. My kids both were in size 2 the longest and DD went to panties from size 3 at 26 months. DS wore 5s before he was potty trained- every kids is different! It sounds like you are on the right track with what you are thinking. My suggestion would be if you are wanting to stock up on diapers, but lots of 2s.

I know... it's crazy!!!!

That's what I got... the Pamper's Swaddlers. Everyone in my family swears by them.

Thanks guys :goodvibes

All of my kids started with the name brand, then by 6 months I got smart and they ended up in Walmarts White Cloud diapers. I swear by them, plus you don't want to overstock in case the baby has a problem with certain diapers. Congrats ohh and my kids went through a package every 3-4 days depending on the age. As they get bigger the number of diapers in a bag get fewer, so as a newborn its a good deal but once they reach the bigger sizes in diapers 2,3,4 you will be buying more.

Both my son's started out with Pampers Swaddlers then Cruisers then when my oldest son turned two, they leaked. We had to switch to Huggies regular (not supreme).

With my baby, he has very cubby legs and can't wear Huggies. Pampers are the only ones that fit.

You will also notice that each brand has different varieties. I hate the plastic feel of Pamper Baby Dry and will only use the cruisers.

Don't stock up on too many. The babies grow fast and you can never predict when they will move up a size.

Lots of luck!

My DD is just 6 months old, so diapers are fresh on my mind. She was 7 pounds 15 oz when she was born. We used Pampers Swaddlers. We went through 1 box (96 count) of the newborn size - that lasted about 2 weeks? I think. Then we went up to size 1 - and used 1 box of those (144ct). I think we were in those for about a month. 2 boxes of size 2's, 2 boxes of Size 2/3, asnd now we're onto Size 3's, which are Cruisers. Basically, after the newborn days, a Jumbo box of diapers lasted us about a month.

Hope this helps, and congratulations!

Since it's still early enough, I'll throw this out there (b/c not everyone is aware that they are a viable option), but have you considered cloth dipes? I love the site: http://www.kellyscloset.com but there are many others.

My guy was in cloth from when he was 43 hours old, and he had figured out potty-learning by his 2nd birthday, and using cloth was great!

Toodles!

If you want to stock up on something, stock up on wipes (Huggies Supreme Natural Care are the hands-down best since they're the thickest). Kids are different when it comes to diapers. My DD never finished the newborn diapers I got her, she needed size 1s. My DS leaked out of Huggies and the White Cloud fit him perfectly while Huggies fit my DD the best.

I totally agree with the wipes. And the Huggies wipes are hands down the best and strongest. When I had my third child, I was given 3 boxes(the ones that you refill the containers with) of wipes plus we bought one before the baby and we didn't need to buy any for a year. I have used all kinds of diapers with all three of my kids plus I watch kids and I personally like Luvs diapers the best, they are cheaper than huggies and pampers. I used store brands many times and every time they leaked. Huggies velcro tabs always ripped on mine and pampers were good just expensive when I could get luvs so much cheaper. your child would probably be in size 2 and 3 the longest.

Huggies Supreme are truly the best!!!

Though, I do like the gentle newborn for the first few months. The Huggie Supreme are really needed when you being solid food. Those ridges really make a difference!

I've never found a "knock-off" of the Huggies Supreme, would love to since they're really expensive and since they are so thick you get a lot less. But for those messy diapers, they're worth it!

Ooo, speaking of wipes, Babies R Us and Target usually sell the "Disney" container of Huggies wipes with a bonus travel wipes container. I've seen Pooh in Red, Nemo in blue, etc.. I think it's around $7 (I don't remember I had a BRU gift card - who looks at prices when shopping with a giftcard??)

What I LOVE about this set is that the travel wipes container is the OLD version. Slim and compact. I really HATE the new containers to accommodate the pop-up wipes, they are huge and take up so much room in the diaper bag. This one is slim and narrow and the Disney design is so cute. Plus I love having a Blue container for my boys :) It being Nemo is a bonus! :)

Cloth diapers are nothing like what they used to be! Wow! The choices out there are amazing!!

Congrats! I wouldn't buy a whole bunch of diapers either. If you are trying to space out the purchasing of diapers, you could always buy yourself a GC from whatever store. Then once the baby is here, figure out which diapers you like for your little guy. I too thought my dd would be big but she was tiny! For her I liked the Huggies diapers b/c they fit her better (narrower or something). She never wore anything bigger than a size 3 diaper.
