My dd is about to turn 13 and Dh and I would like to get her something special. At first we were thinking a charm bracelet but I guess they aren't what they used to be and not that easy to find.

So, we're thinking of her first pair of diamond studs. What do you think is a decent size and any ideas where I should start looking? We're open to any ideas, suggestions or tips! I would like to spend no more than $150...

Thank you,
Barbara Mom to Sierra & Kayla

Overstock.com has .3 TCW for under $150. Clarity & color won't be great, but when they are that small that isn't usually too noticeable.
Check your local jeweler 1st.

Did you consider a pandora charm bracelet? They are running a special next week....spend $100, get a free bracelet.

How has your daughter been about keeping track of her earrings? Has she lost any since she got her ears pierced?

We thought of getting diamonds for my DD for her 19th birthday, but she is so bad at keeping track of earrings that I couldn't see paying for them at this point. We got her some good 14 c gold earrings with Swarvoski crystals in them instead at Kohl's on sale. She's kept them in since she got them.

Maybe that's an option for you. They are sparkly and look a lot like diamonds.

I get my daughter's earrings from local jewelry stores as she has to wear at least 14K or her ears break out (my mother and I also have the same sensitivity to earrings). She has been wanting a pandora bracelet so thanks for the tip. We have a pandora locally so I will have to check out what charms they have.

Edited to add, I just decided against the pandora bracelet. For my DD I only saw maybe two charms she might like. I know a lot of ladies here like the Oragami Owl Living Lockets. Perhaps you could build one for your daughter?

My daughter is 11 and is doing well the last few months keeping her earrings put away properly when not wearing them. There is a ring she wants but I told her she had to show she can care for the earrings first. A relative is having a necklace made for DD with diamonds from her deceased grandmother's ring so she is going to have to show she can take care of things before I give her the necklace as well. That may be put up for a later birthday.

Hope the link works

I bought these 14K white sapphire earrings for myself. They look better than any diamonds in the $200 and under price point and are quite large. They sparkle like crazy. I don't think people know much about white sapphire so they all assume they are diamonds......Just a thought

Thanks for posting. Just purchased these for a Christmas present for a family member. :)

Tiffany & Co has a nice selection for under $250. For my DH God-Daughter's 15th birthday (Quinceañera) we bought her the Return to Tiffany Double Heart Pendant Necklace.

I got a birthstone ring for my 13th birthday. I wore it for almost 40 years. I need to have it reset so I can wear it again. Its a blue star sapphire.

Dd18 asked me not to get her a nice piece of jewelry for graduation, because she would feel horrible when she lost it. I don't know of many (or any) teens with pandora bracelets - just the Alex and ani.

Go to Nordstrom and get her a pair of CZ studs. I wear mine and everyone compliments me, including my sister, who thought they were real. $35. Done.

Why worry about losing something like that when a substitute gives the same effect? Put the money you save in her bank account.

I actually got a pair of diamond studs at Kohls. It was around Christmas and they were having a sale (of course) and had an additional coupon. I bought them online so I went through Discover shopping and got 10% back.
They are 1/2 carat (1/4 each), sterling though, not gold but they were about $160 when it was all said and done.
I really wasn't expecting much for that price but I planned on just returning them if they were frozen spit. They are actually nice. I'm sure the color and quality is on the low side of the scale but they are sparkly and have no big noticeable flaws. I'm really happy with them.

If you want diamonds, pick silver as the metal. You will get bigger diamonds for your dollar.

Pond shops are nice place for cheap jewelry too.

I think it is a great idea. I love to give my girls pretty real jewelry to add to their collection.

What's a pond shop? I'm picturing a store full of lily pads and bullfrogs.

I laughed when I read that too, but I knew she meant PAWN shop. Actually, she is right, you can find great deals there. I don't shop at pawn shops but I know a lot of guys who shop at pawn shops.

Pandora bracelets are passé around here. You can pick up nice ones with tons of charms for a song on Craigslist.

wow I just looked and I'm surprised at how much Pandora I see for cheap.

white sapphires look more realistic when smaller, in larger sizes its easier to see they don't have the same sparkle. swaroski crystals are nice, i have some earrings with those and they are very close in my opinion, however they metal on one of my gold pairs has turned color a bit.

i vote macys when they have a weekend sale. i know lots of people that shop there as they have quality and good sales. right now this one is a great deal, but it is good to buy in person. the clarity can vary and if they are going to be smaller you would want to make sure they are clear enough to sparkle. http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/...CE=100.0|500.0&sp=1&spc=312&ruleId=&slotId=16

My mom's ring wrap that dad bought her for their 50th anniversary came from a pawn shop. She had looked at jewelry stores and didn't like any nearly as much as the one she got there and it was much cheaper. I actually helped her pick it out. Dad had said he was going to buy her a big sapphire and diamond ring that he saw in an ad. I knew she would hate it so I talked him into a ring wrap for her ring that she already has and loves.
