Dialysis

Sort of the basic starting point is for the person to talk with their current dialysis center. In most cases, they are familiar with helping people set things up for travel. They will have to coordinate scheduling, doctor's orders and tnsurance coverage.

My father-in-law may be coming with us during our next trip in June. He was supposed to come with us in the past and my mother-in-law did look up all the info and got the okay from her doctor but when the time got close, he wasn't up to the trip. Now, he will have his own motorized scooter which will be a plus for him getting around. But, he needs dialysis and didn't know if anyone had first hand knowledge about going to dialysis, coming back, having time in the day left, etc.. :confused3 Also, she will have to take him to the dialysis..is there any system that can pick him up and take him? I know he gets that here at home. She can get all this info from the Dr.'s, etc.. but just wondering if anyone had first hand knowledge. Thank you so much!

::yes::
Just what I was going to suggest. I know we had some farily recent threads about dialysis, so if you don't know how to use search, just browse back a few pages and you may find it.
I can't help with searching right now, but if you need help, send me a message (or post on this thread) and I will help you out.
For the getting back and forth, I know some people posted that they set up wit a cab company to have the same driver come to pick them up and bring them back to their hotel each dialysis day.

Thank you very much!
I did search before I made my initial post but didn't find anything.
But, I went through different pages and finally found some info that I sent to my mother-in-law. Hopefully she will find some info useful. Thank you again. I appreciate your help. :teeth:

Your FILs current clinic should have a "transient coordinator" which is often the social worker. (A traveling dialysis patient is usually referred to as a transient.) That person should be able to help him set up travel arrangements, and should be able to help him find a clinic in the Orlando area. I would recommend to start the ball rolling now. June, and all the summer months actually, are usually quite busy. The dialysis clinic I work at is often full during the summer with transients. Those that wait too late to set up arrangements have to be turned away.

If he currently runs at one of the "big chain" units (Fresenius, Gambro, Davita, etc) it's often easier to "visit" another clinic within the same chain. They have access to his insurance info, run sheets, medical history, etc., in their computer system.

As far as transportation, I doubt the social worker at his current clinic can help much, as they probably don't know the transport companies in Orlando. The social worker at the facility he will be visiting MIGHT be able to help with transportation, but you might have to pay out of pocket. Transportation is usually covered by Medicaid (not Medicare) and Medicaid is only good in your state.

Hope this helps.
