Can you use dialup internet from the Disney resorts? I find $9.95 a day very high for high speed internet. I know you can buy internet cards and get so many minutes? We are at Disney for 20 days and I do internet banking to pay bills etc...

Thank you

I think they still have data ports on the Disney in room phone. However, depending on your ISP you might be accumulating big phone charges if you are dialing long distance into your ISP. I know many have local Orlando access numbers, but you'd have to check to make sure they are actually local calls from Disney.
I was going to do the same thing, but I was too afraid of inadvertently making long distances calls on the in room phone. I've used the high speed and it is easy and convenient. You pay for 24 continuous hours. Meaning, if you start your session at 9:14 pm you have until the following day at 9:14pm to use the internet for as much as you want. If you work out when you use it, then you can save a bit of money, by using it every other day.

I used dial up on my last trip and it worked great - doing it again this trip. I have Verizon and just plug the phone line into my laptop. I usually check the local phone # first by dialing it without a 1 - if it goes thru, then I use that # and the call is free.

HTH!!! :goodvibes

$9.95 is outrageous for Internet usage, so I guess if I really really had to use it, I would go with Dial-Up. Simply plug the phone line into your laptop, and the data port in the phone and you're ready to go. WARNING: There might be large phone charges depending on which Dial-Up company you are using. :)

We've used Earthlink dial-up and have always had good experiences. Earthlink has tons of local numbers near WDW and I'm sure other ISPs do too. Also, Disney used to charge a flat 50 or 75 cents per local call but they have since eliminated that charge.

If you have a local dialup number, make sure it's not considered long distance because then you will have to pay more than $9.95 for the call. Just ask the operator at the hotel if it is considered a long distance number before you call. I know for Earthlink (used to have Earthlink and I loved it, but that is a different story), there were some numbers listed as the Orlando/Lake Buena Vista area that were long distance from the hotel.

Just an idea...
There are many places that now offer free wi-fi. I know it may be inconvenient, but you could head over to McDonalds/Subway/Starbucks/etc. to take care of business. I'm not cheap, but when I travel I try to look for hotels with free high speed internet - $10-15/night really adds up. I know that at WDW you have no real choice, so just don't pay it, take your bills to Starbucks, and do your business.

Can you get to any of the hotspots by using WDW transportion? We will be there in June and wont have a car.

I don't want to see what my inbox will look like after 10 days of not checking my email :scared1: but I don't want to pay $10 either.

Thanks for your replies! Think I give verizon a call....

I have Earthlink, and I used a local number for dial up when I stayed at VWL in September. All the local numbers require an area code, but so long as you aren't dialing "1" then you are OK. I did notice that only one of the two phones had the data port, so I don't know if that was a fluke, if they are phasing them out, or what. I was in a 1BR and the bedroom phone had the data port, but not the living room phone.

You would think they could give someone a "length of stay" discount or something, instead of $10 per day.

No. It would be a lot of trouble to find a place offsite to use your laptop. If you don't have a car, then a taxi would cost much more than using the Disney internet for one day.

At the BWVs right now and having no problems using dial-up. I just unplug the phone line from the room phone, plug it into my computer, dial a local number and voila - I'm online!!!

I used AOL from AKL. AllEars has a list of local access numbers that I took with me. I doublechecked with the front desk to be sure the numbers were local before using them. Didn't have any problems at all.

We were at BWV and my DH was unable to access thier internet provider from the room. He had to down to the lobby.

Could you please give me link to that list. I tried a search and couldn't find anything. TIA!

I just got back from a 5 night stay at Pop and Animal Kingdom Lodge. I brought my laptop, have an AOL account, used a local 407 number with dialup and did not pay for any local phone calls.

Okay, I am trying to figure this out, but have never used dial-up before...can somebody tell me exactly how to do it?? :confused3

What is a data-port...do you need one or is it already there?

Do you get the cords hooked up and then physically dial a number on the phone and leave it off the hook until you're done?

And Netzero will let you sign up for free with no obligation?

Sorry I'm so clueless about it, but I would love to be able to have the internet for free!
