Hi!! :wave2: 5 years ago I was told that I am type 2 diabetic. I have gone to WDW since while on oral medication. A few months ago my dr. started me on insulin along with my oral meds b/c it is progressing. My DH & I are planning a trip to WDW for January of 2008. So for I'm only on one injection a day (in th a.m.), I'm hoping to be on insulin only by the time we leave (we want to start trying to get pregnant) I am looking for any advice on enjoying Disney while being on insulin, we are very much food people, always looking forward to where we are going to eat next.

My son is a type 1 diabetic and we've been to WDW several times with him.

There is an excellent website called "Disney with Diabetes" at http://allearsnet.com/pl/diabetes.htm

It is for type 1's but much of it could apply to you if you are using insulin - especially info about traveling and storage of insulin, etc.

You can note the diabetes on your ADR's and the chefs can work with you on food selections that you find appropriate. They can make some things sugar-free but I'm sure you know that many sugar free items have almost as many carbs as the regular version. It depends on what works best for you.

You can store insulin at the first aid centers in the parks if you wish. You might find it more convenient to carry it with you - especially if you go on a fast acting insulin that you take immediately before eating. You don't want to be running back to the 1st aid station all day long! There are cool packs if you need them for storing insulin vials and pens - many places online sell them. Some folks like Frio packs for this.

Also be aware that you may need less insulin while at WDW. The extra activity and such can make a huge difference in your numbers. I was on oral meds only last spring, and had 2 low sugar reactions during that week because of all the extra walking in the warmer weather. I might normally have 1 or 2 low sugar reactions in a year, so this was unusual for me.

I couldn't really lower my dosage of the oral meds, so I needed to eat more carbs. I ate fruit with breakfast (normally I can't), and would share a :mickeybar or Dole whip float in the afternoon with my daughter. I could have dessert with dinner too :cool1: which was nice since they were included on the dining plan.

have a great trip!!! ::sending out pregnancy vibes:: You can do it, I was on insulin while pregnant and nursing, in some ways it's easier to manage than when on oral meds.

Thanks for the great advice, allears.net was a big help. I am sooo looking forward to sampling the great desserts that are at WDW. :cool1:
