Diabetes at the parks...

Me again... DH and I (both 25, diabetic, good health) will want to carry our blood glucose meters (well, probably just one meter and two different lancet devices, just to save on the load to carry in the park) inside the parks. Will this be a problem? Will we need to check in somewhere on this? When they check our bags (probably a drawstring backpack) will our meter and lancet devices raise red flags?

It will be no problem. And each park has a first aid center staffed by RN's who will be more than happy to help if you need it.

We just got back from a week at WDW and had a wonderful time! We have a son who's Type 1. He's 9 years old. You can definately fly with all of your medical "stuff" and should have a note with you from your doctor stating what you are carrying and why, but we didn't need a note at all. We had it just in case. We had plenty of needles, lancets, inserters for pump sets and all the rest of the bulk you probably have too. The plane was no big deal. They probably see hundreds of people every hour in our case. As for in the parks at WDW, every guest goes through a bag check when entering any park. You can take anything in the park, including food of any kind, without a problem. Take your lancets, needles, insulin, etc... Have what you need so you don't have to go back and stop your day to get it. The chefs are good about helping you count carbs adn knowing what is in the food served too. Just ask! If you are on the Disney Dining Plan, you will have plenty to eat in the parks, including snacks, and shouldn't need to take any food with you. We took snacks for our son thinkiing we might need them for lows with all the walking, but the Dining Plan kept us all so full he didn't have a single low on the trip! This was our first drip with Diabetes and we sailed through Disney with flying colors! I know you will too! Also, ask for a fridge in your room so you can store insulin. They are free!

The meter won't be a problem. Sometimes the security people will ask you to open the case. Whenever they direct me to do so, I tell them that it's my meter, and they let it go (though some will still want you to open the case).

One tip: If your meter uses a photo-type battery (not a AAA), make sure you have an extra one with you! A couple of years ago, while at MK, my meter gave me a low battery warning. We couldn't find the type of battery I needed anywhere in the Park - not even in the photo shop. (And, I must state here that it wasn't for lack of trying on the CM's part! They did everything they could to help me, short of going off-property to buy me a battery! ) Luckily, I had an extra battery back in the room. Crisis averted.
