Suppose I skip Fantastic (I've seen it a number of times) to do a couple more rides. Then I exit DHS while Fantastic is sill going on (how long is it-1/2 hour as I remember?) Will it be fairly easy to get out, or will I already be battling the crowds since lots of people start to leave well before Fantastic ends?

There will still be a bubble of crowds at the main exit where the exit from Fantastic guests merge with guests being pushed to the exits.

Take your time - there will always be a bus or boat to get you back to your hotel
We do a no rush WDW vacation = we do not like major crowds, IE wall to wall people.
I would rather wait - then be the first one out.
Relax and enjoy - plus the parks are open about 30 -60 minutes after the last ride is done = go shopping

Evenings within an hour before and 90 mins after park closing will have a greater amount of people exiting the park, including during Fantasmic.

If you wish to avoid crowds you would likely wish to leave at least 90 mins before park close but that’s a lot of valuable park time.

When I asked this question, I assumed that Fantastmic happened every night. But I've seen conflicting information on that. And at least when I do get out, it's a walk back (or in my case, an ECV ride) to the hotel-BCV. As I remember, the walkway along the water isn't crowded, but busy enough so I won't feel alone.

I’m pretty sure Fantasmic occurs every night, weather permitting, except in unusual circumstances like technical issues.

And I agree, you won’t feel alone on the walkway, especially if you leave before Fantasmic lets out.

Fantasmic runs nightly at DHS and sometimes twice a night. As @CarolynFH shared, it is only cancelled occasionally due to weather or technical difficulties.

My favorite part is when the boat comes around the corner and the characters come out. When I took my then 12 year old niece, she missed it because people were walking if front of us to exit the row. I think it’s rude.

Isn't there a new fireworks show called Wonderful World of Animation (or something like that) going on at the Theater at the same time? You may want to add that to your exit strategy.

The OP is not asking about leaving the theatre during the show but, skipping Fantasmic altogether and leaving DHS during the show. They are hoping many guests are at the show making transportation queues shorter and transportation less crowded.

Personally I don’t think it really matters as Fantasmic plays very close to park closing (sometimes after park closing) and the theatre only holds a fraction of the guests in the park so many will be skipping Fantasmic (or unable to see due to a full theatre) and transportation will be very busy.

There is that show also although it takes place in a different location. It plays in the courtyard in front of MMRR.

Today DHS:
- closes at 9PM
- Wonderful World of Animation plays at 9PM
- Fantasmic! Plays at 9:30

We left the park a few nights ago after the Animation show and had no issues getting out. There were plenty of people exiting the park, but it never felt overwhelming.

As a side note, Disney does a pretty good job clearing out the Fantasmic crowd after the show is over.

I'd say if you are leaving the park while Fantasmic is going on, it won't be too bad. If you were leaving after the show lets out, then it's going to be hectic. For us last week, the park closed at 9, but there was only 1 showing of Fantasmic at 9:30. We weren't rushing so we only got a partial/aka no view of the show. It was VERY crowded to get out, especially with small kids and a stroller. Actually getting out of the main park was not an issue. Getting out of the Fantasmic theater was the struggle.

The small fireworks/animation show at 9 was nice to watch, but I'd say a good time to scoot out of the park if you want to avoid a surge.
