Thinking this new structure would be to provide cover for guests as they walk between the entrance plaza and the bus stop.

The structures will be the shade for the resort bus side of the loop. Similar to MK and AK.

what is this extra space in Hollywood studios for? In the image its the lower edge that extends out to the parking lot. The hotel was already said to be small, so what is the rest of that area for? another new land coming to the park?

I believe this is the purposed area for the Star Wars Hotel as well as continued adjustments to the parking lots.

And y'all thought I was crazy. Disney feels so bad for guests there is a COOL BUS for them to cool off in because of this? Animal Kingdom thought they had the longest walk to the gates from the bus loop then Hollywood Studios came up and said "hold my beer."

Like noted in the article this is temporary until the new loop opens for the resort hotels. That loop will be a bit closer and have cover.

How in the world did it take 20 minutes for a fast walker? Were they walking in little circles? I could get to the Epcot busses in 20 minutes from MGM.
