Here's our debate!..6 of us rollin to WDW last week of Sept...From the "Nati" to WDW takes about 16 hrs to drive...Usually we leave 4 in the AM & get to the big "O" round 8: that night. We stay in a local hotel & start our WDW action the next day. This has always worked for us.....THIS year DW want to leave 8:00 PM! drive in shifts through the night, so the kids sleep. putting us in O-town round 11:00 am..Shop DTD & relax @ pool in said local hotel, before we start out WDW action the next day..

Even though my resistance is , most likely, futile...do any of u travlin' Dis-ers have an opinion on this!

I am not a fan of all night traveling. The risk is just too great of falling asleep at the wheel. My hubby and I fight on the 90 minute drive from WDW to our house when it is late at night--b/c I'm tired and want to go to sleep and he will just go to la la land and jerk the car as he catches himself from falling asleep. To those who can do it--GREAT...to those who have a choice--choose SAFE and drive after you have had a good night's or partial night's sleep in your own bed.

I say 4am.

ETA: you should add a poll--that way you can tally votes--as some posters will take time to vote--but not necessarily post.

I have to agree with Lisa Loves Pooh- I am not big on driving all night. I would rather get up early and leave. My husband is notorious for closing his eyes as he drives-although he always denies it. I don't like having to keep an eye on him to make sure he stays awake. It is easier in the early morning for us.

THANKS..Good idea!...the poll has been added!

I like to travel at night, less congestion. Just make sure that you somehow get a nap in before you leave or that the non driver sleeps. Also, the minute you even think you're getting tired switch off.

Good luck let us know who wins!!

I have to vote for driving dureing the day. Safty is a must! Not just the risk of falling alsleep. I do not know what roads you will be taking, but if you have to stop for gas, bathroom ect... some place that would be ok to stop at during the day may not be so great at night. We debated this for our upcoming trip and safty was our deciding factor. If we have to use the restrooms on I95 at night it might not be a safe bet. You never know who will be lerking. Another point will be when you finnally get there after driving all night the kids will want to play and go and you guys will be cranky and tired from lack of sleep. Go with the 4am day drive! JMO

Try something different and go earlier. If she and you drive, then it should not be a bad trip at all. Maybe a lot less traffic pockets (with the exception of rush hour). Check your approx. eta for 7:00-9:00 am to see if you will be in any major city pockets.

If this doesn't work, then take a break or get a room and you will be there the same time, as you wanted to go!

Try it.

We left at 8:00 pm in 2003, also from Ohio and it worked great for us. The boys watched movies until 10:30 and slept all night. My DH works 12 hour nights so I wasn't worried about him sleeping, and I dosed until the boys went to sleep than I stayed up to talk to DH. We stopped at all night resturants or nicer gas stations for bathrooom breaks. This year we will be picking up oldest DS from school and leaving at 3:00, after my DH sleeps all day. It makes the trip go so quick for the boys.

We do not do the night driving - mostly the safety issue. We have in unplanned circumstances and just hated it.

My bigger issue is that I would arrive at my vacation totally exhausted before it even started which would then snowball. It's not like you are really doing anything extra other than shopping/pool.......not worth it to me.

I don't actually have a drive to WDW story, but we trailer camp and one year we left at 2:00am so the kids could sleep. Well all it did was get the kids wide awake and me and my husband exhausted. My husband more so than me since I don't drive when we haul the trailer. He was in a bad mood almost the whole week since he had such a hard time recovering from that drive. Needless to say we no longer leave in the middle of the night. :rotfl:
Dawn

It might be worth giving it a try (leaving at 8pm) as long as you both feel comfortable with being able to stay awake at night. At least this way you'll be able to decide for future trips since you will have answered your own question.

When I was younger we'd make trips like this at night when my dad got off of his night shift. He was used to staying up at night, though, so we weren't that worried with him falling asleep. If he got tired he'd wake either me or mom up for company or stop and get a soda or something.

Breaking down in the middle of the night wouldn't be too, fun, though.

Either way, HAVE A SAFE TRIP!

c) - grab a quick (cheap) flight out of Louisville on Southwest. (for what you'll be paying in gas, you may break even)

Hey, I'm from the 'nati, so I didn't even venture to say book a flight from CVG.

I vote day...

Whenever we drive at night, the passenger always feels obligated to make sure the driver doesn't pass out at the wheel! No one is able to get any quality sleep and we arrive exhausted. JMHO. Good luck and safe travels!

I vote day if you are doing it all in one trip. Had a teacher who took a friend of his daughter's with them for a Disney trip, left at night, and fell asleep at the Florida border...killing the daughter's friend (laying down in teh back seat not buckled in). Gives me nightmares thinking of us driving at night.

NOW, we have left at night before and drove until we got tired (for us around 1 AM). So, if you did that, you could leave around 8 PM, drive until 1 AM (if you are normally "night owls"), then get up around 7AM and drive the rest of the way...hmm...which would probably get you in around 6 PM...which is early enough to enjoy the pool and relax some.

Our current plan is to either get up at 7AM Saturday and drive all day until we get to Disney. Dh, however, is playing with the idea we leave around 5 PM Friday and drive 7 of the hours for our travel (12 hour drive I believe). Then we'll get up around 9 AM on Saturday and travel the rest of the way in.

It is safer to drive during the day. :sunny: :wizard: :moped:

We have always driven at night, but DH is a major night owl. So we always start out after dinner and I drive until around 10 or 11, then he takes over. If we are on a long road trip usually around 3 am or so, we will switch and usually only drive about 2 hours until we switch again. We prefer it over all of the arguments, "are we there yet?", "i don't like this song on the radio", etc. For us it helps us keep our sanity. :rotfl:

There must be something very special about the air over CVG ! I can't believe the cost to fly out of this city. We looked into flying but we are taking two neices this time bringing our total up to six.It just doesn't fit our budget!

Come on ladies - Don't you have my back on this one?
Support my side.
We would never put anyone at risk- If we got sleepy we would switch drivers or stop for the night. Otherwise we won't have time to go to DTD . I need Ghirerdellis!!!!!!!!!!

Because of the kids, we drive at night. It makes the trip much easier and shorter on them. There are precautions you must take in order to do it, for safety sake.

I ALWAYS take a long nap on departure day--and make sure I get plenty of rest for three days before hand. We leave a couple of hours before dinner. It doesn't matter who drives here, although I usually do simply because I know the short cut around heavy freeway rush hour traffic and DH does not. We stop for dinner somewhere. I mean get out of the car, stretch, eat, and be ready to set out as though we just started. We'll drive for a couple of hours, stop at a rest stop, get out stretch, run the kids, use the restroom, and are off again. The kids usually fall asleep very shortly after and DH goes to sleep with them (bring pillow & blanket for all but driver). I drive first because I'm more rested and will tire first--DH naps to build up his strength. When I tire, we switch drivers. We both always get out at gas stations and stretch--it helps keep you alert when it is your turn to drive. As one tires, we just keep switching drivers. And whoever isn't driving, is sleeping. And if we are both tired, we stop for the night, even if it is 4 am. And once the kids are awake, we stop and stretch and run the kids about every 2 hours. It works wonderfully for us. And we usually get to Disney by mid-morning and have a full day there; amazingly enough with everyone fully rested. Somewhere in FL, we do stop a reststop, brush teeth, wash faces, change clothes, reapply deo. in case our room isn't ready.

The scary thing is, when we drive, I actually see more accidents (probably due to more traffic on the road) during the day than at night.

Can you say "Delta hub"? Believe it or not, it's actually gotten better since Delta introduced SimpleFare.

We have a 16 hour drive to visit my parents( kid's grandparents) we drive straight through and we make this trip at least twice a year - I say drive during the day - we tried the night driving and it is hell! When we've done the night driving we've had people approach us at gas stations asking for money ( never has happened in the day) and both DH and I were tired. It is harder to see at night and harder to stay awake while driving at night - I say do the day thing - much safer and easier to stay awake :sunny:
