I choked on a piece of chicken and it lodged in a bad place. Could not cough it out or talk. DH did the Heimlich maneuver twice and it dislodged enough that I could cough it out. It was at supper, with all the kids watching. As I was hyperventilating and beginning to black out, I could only think that my children were watching me go down. After all my DH has been thru, I didn't want them to see this. However, I was able to make myself calm down a bit when I realized it dislodged enough so I could get a little air thru and I did not faint.

This has been a very stressful month anyway, so this was just another day in our household. DH had his 13th heart cath a couple of weeks ago (an old stent had scarred over). Then DD's husband beat her for the 3rd time and the police told her that she could not violate the no-contact order. Well, she did and was arrested with him, so we have their 15 month-old baby. (We just don't understand why she doesn't walk away, especially since it got her in trouble. She has been completely drug-free, a good mother, and doing exceedingly well. She had learned her hard lessons but allowed him to manipulate her.) Then, DH accidentally inhaled a massive amount of chlorine fumes when he opened an old bucket of pool chlorine tablets, which took us back to the ER yet another time. I have had my hands full with a 15-month old that has a different schedule than ours and is out of his comfort zone, giving me major sleep deprivation.

I am so grateful that DH was home when it happened. If it had been just me and the kids....... well, I don't think I would have gotten it out by myself and 911 might have been too late. I know it really scared our teen DS. He understands that his Dad has had too many close calls and knows that every heart cath could be the last. He never thought about anything happening to me until he saw it.

;)..... and it was good chicken, too! I made a new recipe of Parmesan Crusted Chicken that was perfect. Not sure when I will make it again though.........

Wow... what a night... and quite a bit ya'll have gone through!! Big pat on the back to your DH, and big hugs to you for taking care of your grandbaby...

Hope things look up soon for yoU!! Take care!

 Can't believe what you just went through. Thank God you were saved by your husband. He needs you around as do the children!

It's too bad about you DD. She is lucky to have you to take care of her little one. There will be a period of adjustment.

All I can wish you is hope, strength and courage as you face each coming day.

How scary! My mom actually choked on a hot dog last week and I thought my dad was going to have to give her the heimlich. It was really scary.

Glad you are OK! :)

Goodness. It sounds like you are certainly going through a rough patch.

I have heard if you ar choking and there is nobody around to help you, that you can go up to a chair and kind of do "self Heimlich." Basically, push against the chair so that it is an upward thrust just above your belly button. Not sure how effective it is but I've heard that it can work.

I am sorry for all that your family has been through & relieved you are ok. Hopefully you are in for a nice long spell of good news/good luck.

:grouphug:

Eeyore's Butterfly is right - you can throw yourself against the back of a chair or even a kitchen countertop, if you're tall enough. I'm glad your DH was there and knew what to do. My goodness, you have your hands full!

That is quite of a day. Glad that you are fine and hope turns well.

Take care.

My goodness! What a day!

You should do some brief Googling. You can also self-Heimlich by thrusting yourself against the kitchen sink. It is strong enough to force air up to jar the food right out, and having the sink (well, the hole area of the sink) kinda gives you something to feel like you are going INTO something and you have a perfect place to choke out the food.

 I'm so glad he was there and knew what to do! We had something like that happen a couple years ago when DS choked on some bacon. I did the heimlich on him and it worked. What was shocking was that even hours later, I was so shook up I couldn't stop shaking and crying. Your DH is probably more manly than I am (at least I hope so), but I bet seeing your life pass before his eyes shook him up more than you'd think.
