Update: After DH talked with a couple people who have done the drive he feels much better about the trip. We will just break the drive up into a few days each way and he is very comfortable with that. (I guess he thought I wanted to drive straight thru like on other trips we have taken to WDW!) We are taking a 6hr trip next weekend so he can get the feel for longer stretches. I will do some of the driving, as the new truck tows our lightweight trailer like nothing is back there. Thanks for the input. Off to figure out what type of site to book!

Sedate him, throw him in the truck and drive as far as you can then let him drive the rest.:rotfl2:

Or offer to buy him a new flat screen tv with your savings.

Seriously though, look into a Good Sams or other road side assistance program. We've got a newer set up and yet I still have GS just in case. Camping at the fort just seems to give you alot more freedom during your stay. Nothing beets going back to the Fort mid-day and relax outside your rv or in the a/c. One reason we camp is just that, we're not "stuck" in a boring old hotel room. We do have young kids, and trust me we'ed rather deal with them at our rv than in a hotel room. But to each their own, however you get get there just enjoy it.

Good Luck.

If he's not comfortable towing that far I don't think there is anything you can do to convince hm.

As much as I hate to say this, unless he can relax while making the drive I personally wouldn't want to be on the road at the same time.

We pull our pop up down almost every year. DH has no problem with pulling it. I would love to have the confidence to pull it that far on my own, but I don't even like to drive through the mountains without a trailer. All I can say is plan extra time and drive through the busy areas when it is not rush hour. Good Luck!

I don't know how far your drive is but we drive 1000 miles from Maryland every year. We don't tow a trailer, but we do drive a 1983 MH. Sometims we stop along the way and sometimes we don't. Since I don't drive it, I leave it up to my DH. I would definitely stay at The Fort over any resort. The drive might be long, but it's much more relaxing once you get there. Hope this helps.

We tow our TT almost 1400 miles each way to WDW. Our first year at the Fort in '04 we towed a big, heavy old TT that was probably too big for our truck. DH practically made himself sick from nerves. But that was also our very first time towing ANY camper, and we really didn't have the right tow setup either. On the way home the alternator died on the truck at 3am in Middle-o-Nowhere upstate NY. :sad2:

We limped to a local diner that let us park overnight in their parking lot, then up the street to the auto parts store in the a.m. Luckily DH knows his way around under the hood, and less than an hour in the parking lot and we were on our way <whew!>

The past 4 years we've towed our lightweight hybrid down without any trouble. DH was still nervous the first year, but with the right setup and some more experience towing it in general, he was a lot less stressed. Plus now he carries a bunch of tools... and some spare parts too - just in case. :rolleyes1

These days I actually do 90% of the driving, and that will include this year when we've moved up from the 21' hybrid to a 30'+ hard side TT. We've already taken it on a few test runs, DH has adjusted the tow setup and it pulls like a dream.

If your vehicle is sound, your tow setup is good, and you have some roadside assistance service, a longer trip really isn't that much different than a short one IMO.

Not sure if that helps at all, but good luck!

Well, if $3000 isn't enough incentive for him to do it, I'd say he has some serious concerns and any amount of talking isn't going to convince him either! We used to tow a trailer, and honestly, every time we did it, dh became less and less confident about it...not sure why. I refused to drive the setup, so vacations became stressful every time we had to tow. I had pretty much given up on ever going to FW again. Now we have an '89 motorhome, which we both drive, and we're looking forward to the 1000 mile trip as some good, relaxing family time! If your dh is keyed up about the drive, none of you will enjoy it, so unless he has a change of heart, I say keep your hotel reservations and enjoy them. Don't tell anyone;), but I actually found staying at BLT much more relaxing than FW, because I didn't have to do *anything* the entire trip. I did miss my dogs though.

Hooray!!

Yes, breaking up the trip and having another driver absolutely helps. Congrats... now get planning! :thumbsup2

Glad you decided the make the trip. We prefer the full hook up sites, but each person will tell you something dfferent. It all depends on what you want and how much you want to pay. Have fun.

:confused3

From what I can gather, the OP posted something last night about her DH not wanting to camp at the Fort, and that it would save $3000 if they did.

Then, the good folks of the Camping Boards provided good advice as per usual.

And then, this morning, the OP edited her entire post so that the thread now makes no sense.

:confused3

This has happened a couple of times recently.

I wish people wouldn't do that.

If you post something, and people respond to it, why then go back and edit the post so that the responses now make no sense?

I edited it due to several pms I received that said my wording might offend some. (I am not sure why, I just asked for advise on how to help my DH and his anxiety over a long tow since he had never done one before) I didn't want anyone to be further "upset" by my wording and I just wanted those that responded yesterday to know the outcome. I am sorry if I again upset anyone by the confusion on my update.

I get it. I think your original post said help me convince my husband to go to the fort. Sometimes convince can be a trigger word around here:lmao: Maybe you should have started another thread with the good news. It is good news:) Glad you are getting to go to the fort. now it is time to start fort planning:cool1:

Wow... really?!?! Geez, I didn't see anything at all in your post that was offensive, and this is hardly the board where people should feel the need to walk on eggshells.

I'm betting that feedback was because of another recent thread where someone essentially said they needed to be convinced to go to the Fort... and it was taken by some as "ewww, the Fort is so icky... convince me why I should stay there"

Now that some people took a bit of offense to, but really... you'd have to do something pretty horrid - like set an otter on fire, or SPILL THE KUNGALOOSH - to truly offend the people on this board. pirate:

Thanks for that. I think maybe you were right about the other post triggering some to be annoyed by mine. I was told it was the "convince me" part (even though I said I wanted to give up a deluxe stay to camp at the fort). My DH was even excited about a possible fort stay, just a little unsure of the drive. He is definately not afraid of towing just unsure about what it would be like to tow that far. He has been towing trailers for decades but 4-5 hr trips are the longest he ever made. He was just a bit aprehensive about pushing the time on the road and getting tired. He was relieved when I suggested taking a few extra vacation days and not pushing it to get down there like we normally do in the car.

:scared1: The horror of it all!!!! Don't even speak of such things! :lmao:

Kungaloosh:

1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup blackberry brandy
1/4 cup strawberry daiquiri mix
1/4 cup Capt Morgan's spiced rum

mix in blender with enough ice to make slushy.
