DH Might Get a Job...Finally! But What About Our Trip?

DH has been unemployed since January of 2009. We got married in Nov. of 2008, but never took our honeymoon. We just put all our wedding gift $ into a savings account. We wanted to save up some of our own $ before taking a big vacation, and I wanted to save up some vacation hours at work. So, now we have our first WDW vacation booked for Dec. Plane tickets are already "paid" for using free points on my credit card. We've put down $2200 towards the trip so far, and the balance is due in a couple of weeks.

Here's the thing...DH might get a job :yay:/:scared1: He's gotten past the first two parts of the application process for a job w/AAA. He's scheduled to take a computer test on Friday (everyone cross your fingers!). I may be jumping the gun here, but what if he gets the job? He has a mandatory 6-week training period where he can't miss ANY days, but that's not the issue. The real problem is our much-delayed honeymoon. If he gets offered a job, I can't just let him pass it up because of this trip.

Any advice? Should he bring it up to the hiring people? Even if this job doesn't pan out, I have still been worried about this for a long time...what if he gets one before we leave?

I wouldn't bring it up at all. A job is priority now, and as much needed and great a honeymoon trip would be, it would be better to take the time after he has put in his time there.

Good luck! And just think, with the new job, maybe you can even splurge a bit more on the trip. If you think about it, in a lifetime together :lovestruc waiting another year or so for a trip is like a drop in the bucket.

Maybe you can plan some romantic weekends close to home in the meantime?

With an organization like AAA it really should not be a problem. Normally with a large employer at the time they make the actual job offer they will also discuss start date and similar items. At that time he can explain that there is a trip planned (give date range) where airline tickets have been purchased and major down payment on the trip.

And also, as AAA is travel-related, if his position will involve public contact the experience of having been to WDW will be of use.

But generally companies know that people do have pre-existing vacation plans and will usually set up work around them.

I just want to say I feel your pain. Dh has been unemployed since May 2009. Our lives have been on hold I feel like since then. Good luck to your dh. I hope he gets it and you are still able to take the trip.

This. When your DH receives his job offer and discusses his start date, he can tell his hiring manager that he has committed to (and paid for part of) a vacation during xxx dates. Some companies don't allow paid vacations within the first six months but will allow new employees to take time without pay. If they offer him the job, they will most likely work with his very reasonable request.

And congratulations in advance! :goodvibes

Thanks for the encouraging words :)

I hope this is the case! We don't care if he has to take un-paid leave, we're just hoping that he can do the 6 weeks of training, and then delay his start date until after the trip. But...if it does come down to a choice, we'll choose the job.

Now, he just has to pass this test, and any interviews after. The job is for the roadside service call center...DH has a ton of call center experience, so I know he can do it!

Thanks :goodvibes I hope your DH finds something soon. Unemployment really changes things.

I don't mean to be a "wet blanket" but my experiece with specifically call center jobs is that the new employee HAS to be available for the training period. Usually companies with call centers set up these trainings and don't change the dates for one new employee. They may allow a day for a court appearance, a serious medical test, but that's about it. I interviewed for a call center job and when I told them I had a cruise planned for the last week of training, I was told sorry, no job. And I actually did get a job with this company but it was 8 months later, when they had another training going on. And this was a big medical insurance company. There are so many applicants for these types of jobs, they can be very picky on who they hire.

Wish you all the luck in the world. I know what unemployment is like. It's up to the company policies, and then up to you what is more important, the job or the honeymoon at this time. Life can be very tough....

Don't have much advice just wanted to send some thoughts your way! GOOD LUCK!!!!!

As long as the 6 weeks of training starts by the week of the 18th, we'd be ok. If not, then we will have to make the tough decisions.

But it really isn't a tough decidion, we know you have to go with the job...I was lucky and when I hired in at my new job in Oct., 2008, I told the supervisor we were going to Disney in Dec,2008...before we actually signed anything. She was very agreeable in my circumstance cause once I did orientation she did not have to really train me at all, since I was well qualified for my specialty. Think how much fun it will be to go to Disney without that job hunting lurking over your shoulder.

Sending pixie dust your way. Let us know how he does on Friday. :thumbsup2

I started a new job one month before my wedding. When I was hired I let them know that I was getting married and going on my honeymoon and would that be a problem - they allowed me to take the time off without pay.

When they offer him the job he should let them know you have your Honeymoon (not just any vacation) planned for early Dec and would it be possible for him to take the time off without pay. If they say no - then you don't go but I would surprised if they aren't okay with it - particularly if he offers upfront that he understands it would be without pay.

DH works for AAA. I don't know what the policies would be in this branch (AAA is actually 4 regional companies), but he did not get vacation time until he hit his one year anniversery. He did get a few personal days.

So... you already know he would be asking for unpaid time. I would think it would depend on the demands of the job and how flexible his boss is.

I totally agree with this advice. Friends of ours just went through this... they were frank with the employer because like you, they had plunked down airfare for 4 plus rental car/hotel for a family reunion. I think most employers are willing to work with you on stuff like that. GOOD LUCK!!!! :goodvibes
