Dh may need a Scooter this next trip

Its nobodys business why he needs one if it makes his trip more enjoyable thats all that matters. Alot of people who require scooters only need them to avoid walking between attractions to save on knee, foot or stamina problems. Go enjoy your trip. To quote Dr. Suess Those that mind, don't matter...Those that matter, don't mind.

Since your DH limps from the car into the house because his knees have stiffened up on the drive home, when he gets off the scooter in WDW his knees will be stiff enough for him to be getting off slowly and limping there too. Nobuddy will question him when they see how painfully he's moving. If he were to jump off the scooter and kick his heels together on the way down, that might be a credibility issue.

Make sure to rent a scooter off-property. They're cheaper and your DH can take the scooter to the hotel and on the busses. Plus he won't have to worry about all the WDW scooters being rented out before he gets there. If you park hop, the WDW scooters have to be checked in as you leave the park, and check out another at the next park, again hoping that one will still be available.

If people were to raise their eyebrows at somebuddy toodling around on a WDW scooter, they'd be less apt to question a scooter from an off-site rental.

Let him use the scooter! :) Ive used one the last few years, at first my kids (teenagers :sad2:) were mortified to be seen with me, but eventually they decided there were some built in perks (some of the seating is better - but some is worse). Now they dont really care. I fluctuate between taking the scooter on rides or parking and walking in depending on how long the line is, or what the attraction is. I walk with a limp anyway, so when I get off the scooter I grab my cane. I figure if the people watching me get off and walk in have a problem with it, then it is their problem - not mine. I know that I love Disney and the scooter is what allows me to enjoy it and I am not going to suffer and ruin my trip just so some stranger wont possibly roll their eyes or make some comment behind my back. :thumbsup2

The best thing I ever did to make our vacations better was to rent a scooter. I no longer hold everyone up I am not in agonizing pain when we get back to our room. Everyone has a better vacation because I use a scooter. I walk on some rides if the line is short I really don't care what people I will never see again think

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information, including in Post #2 where people rent ECVs.

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

Please ask the following questions. Here are the suggested answers to go with them.

1. Are you disabled (even temporarily)? Yes.

2. Do the people you are traveling with, such as your family, know you are disabled? Yes.

3. Do you expect to meet anyone you know during this trip who may not know you are disabled. Probably No!

4. Do you expect to meet a bunch of people who you will probably never meet again in your life? Probably yes!

5. Is there any reason at all that you should care what these people think about you? Absolutely No!!

6. Will using a wheelchair or ECV make for a better vacation for you and your family? Absolutely YES!

My FIL had very bad hips and knees for many years. We suggested he use an ECV, but he didn't want to, for some of the reasons the OP mentioned.
But, it was painful for the rest of us. We could see how hard it was for him to get around and he missed out on some attractions he really loved because he could no longer walk to them. His days in the park were short and he ended up needing pain killers and ice on his knees every evening.

The first time he rented an ECV, it was wonderful. He got to see some attractions he had not seen in years. W stayed at Epcot lat enough to see Illuminations, which he had not been able to do for several years. And, he said it was the first time in years that he had not ended the day in severe pain. He did say he felt very silly for not having used one years before and that it was really hard to enjoy himself when he started out the day in pain just from walking from the room to the bus stop.

It all boils down to the only person whose opinion counts is the person who is using the ECV.

Thank you all for your kind words. We are looking at renting from apple scooters. Any other recomendations? We will definately rent offsite if he decides he needs the scooter.

I was very happy with Apple this past jan and will use them again next year. I have a bad knee and some arthritis in my back also I can not walk far or stand long. I had rented at the parks for 2 trips but rentinf offsite is so much easier and cheaper.

I totally agree with much, I have MS and could not do the walking in this parks, nor around the hotel, so use Apple Scooter, and get a scooter, and who cares what people think, you need it and thats all. Your husband will be happy he did.

We always use Walkers Mobility for my mom's ECV and love them, but Apple gets good reviews on here also.

Get the scooter. It will make life a lot easier. And for the ignorant people who might look a certain way or make comments? Who cares?

I also agree about renting a scooter from a private vendor so you have it available all the time. There's a lot of distance to cover at the resorts and from the bus stops to the park entrances. Your DH might need to learn the fine art of backing the ECV onto the bus lift, but it will be well worth it and save him some pain.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
