Hey everybody, I'm looking for some insight from those who live in the Philadelphia area, particularly across the river on the Jersey side (Cherry Hill area specifically). My husband just found out that he is being transferred there for his job, so we will be moving there in just a few weeks. I'm somewhat freaking out, and I've been on the city data boards, etc. but I just wanted to hear from some fellow DIS-ers who may live in the area.

What do you like about the area? What is there to do with small children (my girls are 3 and 1)? What grocery stores are in that area? Any other advice would be appreciated.

P.S. I told my hubby I didn't care where we moved, as long as we didn't have to cancel our Dec. 12-18 WDW vaca :lmao:

You will like the area. There are lots of shopping centers and malls. I don't know where you live now but there a quite a few grocery stores in the area. The school systems in the area are good. There are plenty of restaurants and movie theaters.

Cherry Hill, Marlton, Deptford, etc. is a very big area. Many of the schools are considered quite good, but they are large. Marlton has many of my favorite stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Panera, PF Changs, etc. Traffic congestion during rush hour in this area can be quite bad. Whereever you pick, check the traffic during the times of day dh will need to go into the city. You could also look at Bensalem area.

My DBIL is from that area! Course, he hasn't lived there in a long time so I am of no use to you, but seeing the name Cherry Hill caught my eye! Good luck :)

We live in a town next to Cherry Hill called Maple Shade (welcome to NJ in advance!), I grew up in Philly and was a teacher in Cherry Hill before DS5 was born. Feel free to ask whatever you want! There is no such thing as a bad question...just the teacher in me talking. :)

Will you definitely be living in Cherry Hill? It is one of the larger towns in this area, but there are also many nice towns all around. The PATCO high speed line runs through quite a few of them, and when my DH worked in Philly years ago, he drove to a PATCO station and took the train into the city to avoid the hassle of city traffic, gas prices and expensive parking. In what part of Philly will your DH be working?

Cherry Hill is in Camden County, but Burlington County is right next to it and that is where we are. We chose it because property taxes and car insurance are a bit lower (both are disgustingly high in NJ), and it is less built up than Camden County. Moorestown in Burlington County and Cherry Hill and Haddonfield in Camden County are among the higher-priced towns, property wise, and there are a few towns that you may want to avoid. But there are lots of towns in between that are also great, many with a very 'small-town' feel but still close to everything you'd want. We LOVE our 'small town' of 20,000!

Cherry Hill has a good sized, new library, a hands-on children's museum (http://www.discoverymuseum.com/), an aquarium nearby (http://www.adventureaquarium.com/), nearby farms where you can pick your own or go on hayrides (http://www.johnsonsfarm.com/ and http://www.springdalefarms.com/), just lots to do with little ones within a relatively short distance. We had a membership to the Discovery Museum when my boys were the ages of your children, and they absolutely loved it. There is a special fenced-in area for toddlers/preschoolers, all hands-on, that you can give them some freedom and still watch them as they explore. They never got tired of it! There are also a wealth of great museums and a zoo in Philly if you don't mind driving in the city.

There are two malls in the immediate area (Cherry Hill Mall and Moorestown Mall), and many, many shopping centers. Just about any store, or type of store, you can think of is within a 10-30 minute drive, depending on traffic/time of day. Markets include Shoprite, Wegman's, Pathmark, and Superfresh. Lots of restaurants, from fast food to five star and everything in between.

As a PP said, traffic congestion can be an issue, and right now it feels as if they are doing construction everywhere! We're one of the only two states in the country where you are not allowed to pump your own gas :woohoo:! From here we have about a 1 1/2 hour drive to a variety of nice towns "down the shore" (what we call the beach). Many people in South Jersey are transplants from Philadelphia, so you need to learn the lingo...most say "Iggles" for the Philadelphia Eagles football team, and "crick" for creek, among others. Good Philadelphia cheesesteaks, hoagies and soft pretzels can be found all over the area, just ask some of your new neighbors and they'll point you to a good place.

Let me know what else you'd like to know, and I'd be happy to share. Good luck with your move, and have a great time in WDW. We were there last year Dec. 12-19, and it was fantastic!

CH has a large but very well regarded school system. If you have middle or high schoolers there is a choice system in place-- you can pick out of the three middle schools and two high schools. (one of the middle schools is an IB school-my kids have gone there)

Housing, especially apartments is plentiful. There are a lot of new complexes on the West side. West side is where the mall, Garden State plaza and many new shopping areas are. The library is great and very new.

East Cherry Hill (08003 zip code) is closer to Marlton, and has more expensive homes.

DH and I both work in Philly and it takes me 10 minutes tops to drive in to work. DH takes the train (no parking at his job) and it is an easy ride.

Traffic is traffic. To me it isn't bad.

I live in Gloucester County, which is south of Cherry Hill. Like Burlington county, we have lower taxes than Camden County. (NJ property taxes really are high.) Washington Twp. has great schools and a good variety of stores and restaurants. Welcome to the Garden State!

Welcome to NJ I live over by the shore but my ds is at Rowan University and I think is becoming a native of that area. He is living on campus, working there this summer in the engineering dept. He loves it down there.

Good luck with the move.

Welcome NJ!!
I also live in Gloucester county. So my advice is if you moving to the Cherry Hill area have a GPS because it is easy to get lost over there I get lost every time I'm in Cherry Hill.

Welcome to NJ, I live an hour or south of CH is a farming area in Vineland. I just love my quite life in S. Jersey. The Fall is beautiful. I go to Marlton, Deptford and Cherry Hill often. Not much in my next of the woods :)

Another Shader here (Maple Shade)..just outside of Cherry Hill. There is tons of shopping, and restaurants here in South Jersey. You are also only about 20 minutes outside of Philly, which has some amazing restaurants too. Supermarkets are mostly: Acme, ShopRite, Whole Foods, Wegmans.

As far as Cherry Hill goes, there are two sides :East and West. Cherry Hill East has always been considered the "better" side, although I think both sides are just fine. It isn't like one side is a slum and the other is an Estate. That being said, Cherry Hill East schools have won many awards. Voorhees, and Haddonfield are also two close by towns with great schools. I'll put a plug in for good old Maple Shade, by saying that lots of people who are born in Maple Shade, stay in Maple Shade. (Example, My Parents, myself, and my two sisters all own homes in the Shade). Maple Shade "does" alot for the kids as far as Easter Egg hunts, sports and Halloween activities.

Good Luck with your Move and Enjoy your trip!:woohoo:

As for taxes in Camden County vs. Burlington County- it really does depend.

We have owned houses in Marlton (Burlington County) and Cherry Hill (Camden County). Our taxes in Cherry Hill are cheaper--but not by much.

It just may be the way were were assessed but it is cheaper for us to live in Camden County vs. Burlington County. Now there are some very expensive areas of Burlington County as well -- Moorestown can have homes with 13-14,000 in taxes alone!

It really is great for us. We live in an old fashioned neighborhood where kids still ride their bikes in the neighborhood, people walk to stores/friends houses and they are outside. It has a neighborly feel. We do have a nice mix of elderly, young couples, older couples, and families with kids of all ages. My kids walked/rode their to elementary school and now to high school.

We love our area. I love that it is friendly and not intimidating/imposing.
